Details
Easily the most impressive wine in the Marron Creek range, this ultra spicy red is drenched with black mushrooms, dark fruit and all these lovely earthen hints. It's like a hearty, slow cooked meal but in wine form. Just when you think this organic West Aussie red is going to get too firm and heavy, it ends up finishing with this warming, but not hard, savoury spice mediumness. Want to know what that unusual blackberry note is in the mix? That's the 5% Malbec putting a little extra berry flavour into the mix!
Marron Creek Wine Co. is the work of Brian Kent, who is also the chief winemaker at Western Australian star winery Frankland Estate. The Marron Creek project is centred around a forgotten jewel - a certified organic vineyard once known as the Old Kent River in the very south of the Frankland River region. Not only does the property boast forty-year-old vines, but they're surrounded by a series of ponds filled with local West Australian marron, hence the name. Who wouldn't want an old vineyard with ponds full of amazing local crayfish? The wines are impressive, too, with a trio of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Shiraz/Syrah that look cool, spicy and yet rather powerful. Not that we'd expect anything else for a winemaker who already produces some of WA's most famous wines under the Frankland Estate label!

Pairing guide
This spicy and savoury WA Syrah really packs in a kaleidoscope of flavours, which makes it a surprisingly interesting wine to pair with different foods. Ideally, it is happiest served with mushrooms in any form, just to pick up on those flavours in the wine. Otherwise, go with roast meats - pretty much any roast meats - with a rich gravy, and will be delicious alongside a plate of steak and chips, sausage and mash, and other pub-grub favourites. Ratatouille, game meats like venison or boar, barbecued vegetables, and ham and cheese combos will also hit the spot perfectly.

Wine region

Frankland River, Australia
Frankland River is one of five sub-regions in Great Southern, Western Australia. The Great Southern as the name suggests is extremely large, spread out over 100 km north to south and 150 km east to west. Frankland River is located in the north-west part of Great Southern and is known for high quality Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and Riesling as well as recent movement towards Grenache, Tempranillo and other Mediterranean varieties. The region is relatively recent with plantings dating back to 1967 and by the 1980s wineries like Alkoomi and Frankland Estate were well established.
