Details
For those who are on a health kick, and read the odd book on processed food vs real food, you’ll know that the odd glass of red wine is actually healthy for you. So, if we were doctors, which we definitely aren’t, we have the wine for you. Tannat, which originates from Madiran in southern France, is dark, inky and has plenty of tannin as well as lots of antioxidants. Drink up!

The French wine scene can be somewhat of a minefield at times, all we really want is a supplier that makes wines from all across the country while still displaying regional and sub-regional typicity.. Simple right?!? Well, enter Maison Johanès Boubée which is a winery that has succeeded in the French landscape, while relatively unknown outside its borders. The winery has access to all the goodies around the country and aside from an impressive winemaking team, it also has employed sommeliers to taste each wine to confirm it meets that all important terroir feel of each region. The winery is a nod to the old-school way, where you didn’t need to boast a fancy label to sell a bottle of wine and the juice inside is the most important part. We have tasted through a large range of their wines and are very impressed with the overall quality in each bottle. The ‘Carte Noire’ range focuses on the regions that don’t get the same amount of attention that the golden children of France, Burgundy, Bordeaux and Champagne, receive.

Pairing guide
A bonafide masterclass is the winemaker’s art, this red blend is a gorgeous bottle to share over dinner with friends. Brilliantly versatile, it’s going to work well with chicken thigh dishes, homemade burgers and meatballs, bean casseroles and braised lentils, and steak with chips and peppercorn sauce. Roast leg of lamb, ragu sauces in dishes like bolognese and lasagna, and eggplant with parmesan will also provide excellent results. Give them a go for yourself!

Wine region
Madiran, France
Madiran is a small wine region in southwest France, with a reputation for heavy hitting red wines made primarily from the Tannat. The region is located in the foothills of the Pyrenees Mountains and has a terroir of sandy, gravelly soils with patches of clay and limestone. The region is divided into three sub-zones, each with its own microclimate and subtle but key differences. The wines of Madiran are known for their robust tannins and deep flavour of dark fruit, liquorice, and spice. Not exactly a super food, but did you know Tannat, the region's dominant grape variety, has one of the highest levels of the antioxidant compound procyanidin among all red grape varieties, making Madiran wines not only delicious but potentially beneficial for health. *Raises brow*
