Details
Such a surprising wine - made white but from a dark red grape, Aglianico. The skins are discarded immediately, so the wine has no red colour, but plenty of flavour. From lemon oil and rind on the nose to a back palate of nectar from the season’s first stone fruits. Honey, ginger and smoke are all present as, showing a complex package!
Cantina Madonna della Grazie is an historical estate located on the now-flattened slopes of what was previously an active volcano, Monte Vulture. Here the focus is on the great red grape of southern Italy, Aglianico. The winery is named after the local church (Our Lady of the Graces) and there is indeed something religious about the love of the wines here - mysterious and wonderful all at once. That's part of the appeal of Aglianico; its wildness and its wonder. The winery is run by Paolo Latoracca, the family’s principal winemaker, along with his brother Michele, and of course, being Italian, watchful guidance from their parents Giuseppe and Irma. Both of the parents works in the winery and vineyard as youngsters, and still are involved in labelling and local sales. The winery is certified organic, and the current vines were replanted in the 80s, making them quite mature currently (the vineyards of the region are generally replanted every 30-40 years). The wines here are filled with personality, freshness and detail, and still manage to possess that wildness of spirit that encapsulates the region.

Pairing guide
Wow - this unusual and utterly delicious white wine from the foothills of Mount Vulture, an extinct volcano in the heart of one of Italy’s most beloved wine regions, really knows how to impress the palate! It’s a beautiful wine for food pairing, and shows just how versatile and fascinating the Aglianico grape varietal can be. We loved pairing this wine with delicate mushroom and cream dishes, and it’s also going to be absolutely banging with a homemade pate, served with crusty bread and crudites. Like a lot of Italian whites, this vino can pair very well with chilli-spiked Asian cuisine, especially coconut milk-based Thai curries, and spicy tofu broths.

Wine region

Basilicata, Italy
Basilicata is a burgeoning wine region located in the southern part of Italy; if you can picture the boot shape of Italy, Basilicata is located where the arch would be! The region has a long wine-making history. In the northwest is Aglianico del Vulture DOC, vineyards perched upon a dormant named Monte Vulture (one of the tallest in Europe at 1000m). This classification has a reputation for serious reds made of Aglianico (often blended with Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon). The cream of the crop is Aglianico del Vulture DOCG Superiore - bold, intense, with a deep and satisfying flavour profile; a wine to lay down for sure. To the east of Basilicata is Matera DOC, known for its aromatic white wines made from the Greco and Malvasia and reds from long-lived Primitivo. Basilicata is uncharted territory and one to look out for!
