Details
Mono A is a patch of old vines in the Vila Nova de Tázem area known for its granite soils. Here, the grape is Alfrocheiro, which is renowned for making deeply coloured, but often juicy purple wines, just like this one. Made with no additions except a tiny bit of sulphur, this proudly natural wine is a beautifully expressive and vibrant red of cherry fruit and rampant spice.
In the world of Portuguese wine, Dirk Niepoort is a God. Described as Portugal's most famous winemaker, he has championed the rise of single vineyard wines in a country never known for it. And who was the longtime 2IC and senior winemaker helping perpetuate Dirk's legend? Luis Seabra. Now, Seabra is out from behind the legend and crafting superstar wines from sacred plots all over Portugal. His philosophy is best illustrated by his brand name Cru (which is more accurately translated as 'raw' in Portuguese) with an emphasis on pure expression of a myriad of often tiny blocks and indigenous grapes. Oh yes, these are special wines.

Pairing guide
Historically, the typically powerful reds of the Dão region is a natural choice with smoky meats and BBQ, especially when paired with the more robustly flavoured wines. But this Luis Seabra wine is different - it's more medium weight, still with the stout tannins, but with more spice and less heat. Smoked meats are still a natural option, but we would trade in pork and chicken or beans for a little something different. Sauces with paprika and any tomato based sauces are going to pair nicely with this red too.
