Details
What better way to experience how the islanders drink than with a Lord Howe Island gin (made with the local lemons) and some of the hibiscus for extra flavour? This delicious pre-mixed drink is super refreshing with just the right amount of sweetness for the tangy and quite floral gin, giving a sense of refreshment that will have you reaching for the snorkel.
Lord Howe Island Distilling Co. is the work of Anthony Riddle and Christian Young, who wanted to make spirits (and beer - there is a Lord Howe Island Brewing Co. arm as well) that fit with the life of Lord Howe Island and celebrated some local flavours. The duo have really succeeded, championed by the Wild Lemon & Hibiscus Gin that uses the famous Lord Howe Island lemons that were first introduced by settlers almost two hundred years ago and remain one of the symbolic tastes of the island (though apparently they have thorns!). It's not just gin but also vodka in the range, which proudly incorporates island-foraged botanicals for that true Lord Howe taste.

Pairing guide
Given how crisp and afternoon-friendly this intriguing gin and tonic tastes, you can absolutely be forgiven if you simply want to enjoy a can on a warm afternoon. But for anyone after a delicious pair, we can't go past fresh grilled fish, with a preference for white or pink fish like snapper, whiting, kingfish or salmon. Fish tacos would be a wonder here too, as would a vegetarian tofu or mushroom fajita or taco as well, especially with the slight sweetness giving a good contrast to a little spice and chilli additions.
