Details
We love a grape with a story, and today it's about Refosco - usually found in northeastern Italy near the Slovenian border. Refosco makes lovely, bright, and tangy red wines with this beautifully plummy energy to it. In this red wine from Little Reddie, Pat Underwood has married Refosco and Nebbiolo from Heathcote (Australia) to make a beautiful, chillable, light red. It tastes of blackberries and black cherries with a little spicy lift. It's rare to call a red fresh, but this is fresh!
It was coffee that first brought Pat Underwood into wine. Working behind the bar in a Castlemaine venue, he was inspired to learn more about coffee, beer and eventually wine thanks to the influence of Jarad Curwood of Chapter Wine. Jarad then allowed Pat to pick some fruit from his vineyard in 2012 and voila, Pat was a winemaker! There was only a small amount of juice, so he was using a cut-down barrel to make his wine and came up with Little Reddie as a nod to that first mini-vessel and the joy of catching Redfin (an introduced fish that is popular in country Vic and known as a Reddie). Since then, Pat has done vintage all over the world, including a particular stint with the famed Olek Bondonio in Barbaresco that led Pat to fall in love with the Nebbiolo grape. Now back in Australia, Pat makes a fab range of enigmatic and charismatic minimal intervention wines using grapes from vineyards across Central Victoria, with Nebbiolo a proud focal point.

Pairing guide
Bright and brooding, the 2025 Colbinabbin Nebbiolo Refosco blends wild cherry, dried herbs, and a little tannic grip. It’s perfect for food with punch—spicy lamb meatballs, tomato-based pasta with olives and capers, or a roast beet and feta salad. Think rustic Italian meets cheeky Australian twist. It loves dishes with acidity, richness, and herbs—so load up the rosemary, chilli flakes, and anchovies. Decant it, chill it a touch, and let it ride shotgun to a big, satisfying dinner.

Wine region

Heathcote, Australia
The Heathcote wine region is located in central Victoria and until the 1980’s it was broadly known as part of Bendigo. The region itself is famous for the ancient cambrian soils which date back 500-600 million years which characteristically have a rusty, iron colour and have good moisture retention which is ideal for this warm region. Heathcote is well suited to Shiraz and Grenache as well as newly introduced varieties like Fiano and Nero D’Avola.
