Details
A great wine, this blends a touch of Gamay from Beaujolais into classic Burgundian Pinot Noir. It offers cool aromas of fresh-picked black cherry and liquorice, mixed with dark raspberry and black pepper. The palate reveals a touch of rusticity to its very ripe, plush flavours, with moderate tannins guiding the wine along its path. There is superb focus coming from the stunning minerality and notes of granite, no doubt from the touch of Gamay. Delicious.

Burgundy winemaker Thibault Liger-Belair owns some fine vineyards on the Côte d’Or and in Beaujolais. Starting in 2001, he has grown his holdings to now encompass some of Burgundy's finest vineyards, plus some great plots in neighbouring Beaujolais. “I’m a lazy winemaker,” he says, “but I’m a very hard vineyard worker. Because you cannot make good wine if the grapes aren’t good.” An example of his fanaticism is shown in his dedication to choosing the best oak tress for his barrels. He travels to the forest and selects the trees that he wants his barrels to be coopered from. In the forest, he makes sure the timber from the south side of the trunk is kept apart from that from the north side. The south side, which faces the sun, is selected for the staves that go into the barrels for his top Côte de Nuits wines because this timber is tighter-grained and finer. Wild dedication! His vines are tended organically and look prime and healthy. His wines are complex and solidly built, providing easy pleasure and long cellaring potential.

Pairing guide
This elegant red blend makes great work of two of our all-time favourite food pairing wines: Pinot Noir and Gamay. With its silky body and excellent gluggable character, we love pairing this wine with rich, fatty meats like duck (especially when cooked in a fruity sauce featuring caramelised orange or cherry), chicken tagine, meat loaf, or cheap, juicy cuts of beef like hanger steak. It’s also surprisingly delicious polenta, and with seafood too - especially roast cod with cherry tomatoes, or spicy squid made with a tomato and chilli sauce.

Wine region
Burgundy, France
Burgundy is located east between Paris and the Swiss border and is known for producing some of the finest and most sought-after wines (Chardonnay and Pinot Noir) in the world. The region can be divided into the following sub-regions from north to south: Chablis, Côte d'Or, Côte Chalonnaise, and Mâconnais, with parts Beaujolais to the south now under consideration. Chablis is located north of the Côte d'Or and is known for its crisp, dry white wines made from Chardonnay, made without the influence of oak. Some of the best domaines in Chablis include William Fèvre and Christian Moreau. The Côte d'Or is the heart of the Burgundy wine region and is divided into two main areas: the Côte de Nuits and the Côte de Beaune. The Côte de Nuits is known for its red wines, while the Côte de Beaune is known for its white wines. The best domaines in the Côte d'Or include Domaine de la Romanée-Conti and Domaine Georges Roumier! Mâconnais and often overlooked Côte Chalonnaise produces red and white wines. Some of the best domaines in these regions include Domaine Bouchard Père et Fils and Domaine Jean-Jacques Girard.
