Details
From the famed Malakoff vineyard in the Pyrenees in central Victoria, this is a Syrah of concentration, acidity and wonderful balance. Generous in that way that all Aussie Syrah is, but with oodles of spice, char and a topnote of floral delicacy to charm. Ample, round and plush, it carries all the dark cherry and berry fruit with pepper, charcoal and jasmine. Very good.
Meet Maree Collis and Ray Nadeson, the scientists-turned-wine wizards at Lethbridge Wines. PhDs in hand, they ditched labs for vineyards in 1996, joined by friend Adrian Thomas. Their scientific selection of the Lethbridge site, due north-west of Geelong has long since borne fruit, with the discovery that the land was once home to a vineyard in the 1870s, originally planted by Swiss settlers. This home vineyard was replanted by Collis and Nadeson, and these days is managed using sustainable principles, informed by organic and biodynamic practices. Ray comments that "Winemaking is not really that different to science, both are creative and both involve 99% perspiration, 1% inspiration." More than 25 years after they started, it's fair to say both have been put into practice! Lethbridge Wines enjoy global acclaim, adorning the tables of elite restaurants everywhere. Plus, Ray and Maree aren't slowing down, introducing new labels - look out for Between Five Bells, il Modo, and Nadeson Collis. Great drinking abounds.

Pairing guide
The team at Lethbridge continue to impress and amaze with this wonderful Syrah wine, which perfectly captures all the best features of this world-beating variety in every single sip. When it comes to food pairing, you’re best matching this characterful red with deeply savoury meaty dishes - classic stews like goulash, bourguignon and tagine with cheaper cuts of slow-cooked lamb, pork and beef - as well as with homemade burgers, meatballs, ragu sauces and braises. Lentil and bean dishes will work well as veggie alternatives, and this wine will also work beautifully with eggplant creations, pilaf with lamb and chickpeas, and all kinds of mushroom recipes. Yum!

Wine region

Pyrenees, Australia
The Pyrenees wine region is located in the state of Victoria in Australia. It is known for producing a range of high-quality red and white wines, particularly Shiraz and Chardonnay. The region is named after the Pyrenees mountain range, which forms its eastern boundary. The wine-growing area extends from the town of Avoca in the north to Moonambel in the south and is situated at an altitude of between 200 and 600 meters above sea level. The region's cool climate and diverse soil types are well-suited to grape growing and contribute to the unique character of the wines produced here.
Cool fact: the region is home to the "Big Red," a life-sized sculpture of a red grape that serves as a popular photo spot for visitors to the area, so if you find yourself in the area, be sure to check it out!
