Details
The finest parcels of fruit are selected for the Cullerin wines, and this Chardonnay displays complex aromas of grapefruit zest and just ripe nectarine fruits and cashew nut oak. The palate is textural and multilayered; a dance between the fruit and fine, balanced acidity and a long mineral, nutty finish. An outstanding example of modern, cool-climate Chardonnay from the Canberra District.

Opposite the mysterious Lake George, at the foot of the Cullerin range outside of Canberra, is Lerida Estate. This site was selected in 1997, following the local wisdom of legendary CSIRO scientist Dr Edgar Riek. The facility is a marvel of architecture designed by Glenn Murcutt and built in 2005. The roof is an iconic iron woolshed design, bold enough to be recognised from afar. At the heart of it all, is a remarkable multifunction cellar that is as fit to entertain as it is for making fine wine. Thankfully the wines more than meet the expectations with award-winning Pinot Noir, Shiraz Viognier, and an elegant range of whites. While the original focus was Pinot Noir, the flag bearer is now Shiraz, most notably the Shiraz Viognier blend. Also grown on-site are Pinot Gris, Chardonnay, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Since 2017, with renewed confidence in the Canberra Wine Region, Lerida has expanded beyond its Lake George sub-region to include premium fruit from nearby regions, including Hilltops, Orange and Tumbarumba. The future is bright for Lerida, the offerings have diversified to suit the demand, but the objective remains to produce stylish wines from low-yielding vineyards with minimal intervention techniques.

Pairing guide
A great Chardonnay is always cause for celebration, and this stunningly opulent white from Lerida Estate definitely fits the bill. We loved it with richer seafood dishes, especially those which combine tender rice with white crabmeat or lobster. However, it’s also going to be fabulous with creamy curries, buttery pasta dishes, and salads with a rich dressing. Smoked salmon, chicken breast dishes and whole roast poultry will be delicious here, and it’s not half bad with a big plate of fish ‘n’ chips, either.

Wine region
Canberra District, Australia
Canberra wine district is located in and around the Australian Capital Territory. Apart from one producer in ACT, this wine district is commonly associated with NSW regions Murrumbateman, Bungendore and Collector. Being inland, the region has an extreme continental climate, with very warm days and typically cold dry nights even in Summer. Riesling thrives in this climate, the stand-out variety among the crisp whites available here. But it's the cool-climate Shiraz that steals the show. Actually, Canberra wine district has a well-established reputation for one of Australia’s best Shiraz – notably Clonakilla’s Shiraz Viognier. The wine region is a bit of a best-kept secret, if only Sydneysiders knew it to be equidistant to Hunter Valley! Canberra wine bars and restaurants here have generated quite the buzz in recent years, and with vineyards just a 30 minute drive from Canberra city; why not enjoy both in a day? Halliday hitters include Clonakilla, Helm (Riesling), and Lark Hill (Gruner Veltliner), but don’t miss out on the envelope-pushing producers such as Ravensworth, Mallaluka, and Mada Wines! Don’t sleep on the Canberra Wine District!
