Details
This high and cool part of Piedmont in western Italy makes Nebbiolo in a refreshing and utterly medium-bodied style that is so great. There are a little alpine herbs and florals, before a flavour dive into red and black cherries and a little pomegranate, with these life-affirming ferrous tannins that just make everything more lively.

One of the truly magical things about Italy is that around every corner, at all points of the country, it's possible to stumble upon a winery making charismatic vino. And so it is we find ourselves in the hamlet of Barge, an ancient village at the base of the Italian Alps in Piedmont, in an area which Leonardo da Vinci declared in 1511 was suitable for growing grapes (and has been famed for wine since the Middle Ages). 'Tradition in a glass' is the motto for the Le Marie winery, where Valerio Raviolo and family craft some classic wines from their 10-hectare plot, crafting a particularly famous sweet wine from the little-known local Malvasia Moscata grape, alongside classic Barbera, Nebbiolo and a rather handy rosato, all delivered with a certain alpine crunch and vitality.

Pairing guide
It's hard to go past some Italian alpine classics when you're choosing things to pair with this charismatic red from the mountains, especially when the matches are so good. Those savoury tannins and crisp acidity really deserve earthy, spicy flavours, especially with a little sweetness. Venison is the archetype match here, often with berries or fruit for some juiciness; otherwise, mushrooms, especially with plenty of herbs, garlic, cheese and indeed truffles, are the absolute go-to, with polenta and risotto working wonderfully. Of course, a wedge of quality hard cheese is near perfect here as well!

Piedmont, Italy
The Piedmont wine region in Italy is a magical place known for producing world-class wines. The region is bordered by the Alps to the north and the Apennine Mountains to the south, and it is characterized by rolling hills and a diverse landscape. The climate in Piedmont is generally cool and wet, with warm, dry summers and cold, snowy winters. This climate is well-suited to grape growing offering slow and steady ripening conditions which lead to high-quality and expressive wines. Piedmont is most praised for its red wines, particularly Barolo and Barbaresco, which are made from the Nebbiolo grape. Barbera and Dolcetto are other celebrated reds of the region, and as for its white wines, Arneis, Moscato d'Asti and the rare Nascetta. Piedmont is also famous for its flavorful truffles, often used in local dishes, and pair beautiful with its regional wines.
