Details
Aussie Nebbiolo has certainly improved over the past decade - take this as a prime example. Fruit was sourced from the famed Malakoff vineyard in the Landsborough region of the Pyrenees. The resultant wine is rustic, but with a gorgeous bouquet of rose and cherry. The body is impressive, spicy with paprika and clove, grippy tannins that guide the fruit, and a finish of liquorice and orange.

From great challenges arise great results. Latta Vino is a pretty good example of this, being a winery born of an unusual history and with a dedication to producing characterful and unexpected wines. Owen Latta is the son of Norman Latta, the man who established Eastern Peake winery (which may well be the best Australian winery you've never heard of, but that's another story), but due to an accident had to give up winemaking when Owen was still a teenager. Young Owen didn't shirk, and threw himself into the task. Fast forward to today, and Owen is one of the most respected young winemakers in Australia, his family winery better than ever, and his own label Latta at the cutting edge of Australian wine. His vision was a particular one: to work with the diverse and occasionally difficult soils of Coghills Creek and surrounds to produce wines which he would be proud to be associated with his land. Small yields, challenging seasons and a range of natural, sustainable methods were the way forward, and before long, the wines began to speak for themselves. They now sit proudly at the summit of Victorian wines - fresh, fragrant and complex.

Pairing guide
Nebbiolo wines are widely hailed as among the best red wine varieties in the world, and with releases as beautiful, punchy and flavourful as this one, it’s not hard to see why. All that depth calls for big flavours to be paired with - we loved it with beef and mushroom casserole, Venetian duck ragu and other Italian meaty classics, but it’s also going to taste fantastic with roast lamb or whole roast poultry, and vegetarian dishes with plenty of aged pecorino. Chinese barbecue, cheesy polenta with braised lentils, and eggplant parmigiana will also hit the spot perfectly.

Wine region
Pyrenees, Australia
The Pyrenees wine region is located in the state of Victoria in Australia. It is known for producing a range of high-quality red and white wines, particularly Shiraz and Chardonnay. The region is named after the Pyrenees mountain range, which forms its eastern boundary. The wine-growing area extends from the town of Avoca in the north to Moonambel in the south and is situated at an altitude of between 200 and 600 meters above sea level. The region's cool climate and diverse soil types are well-suited to grape growing and contribute to the unique character of the wines produced here. Cool fact: the region is home to the "Big Red," a life-sized sculpture of a red grape that serves as a popular photo spot for visitors to the area, so if you find yourself in the area, be sure to check it out!
