Details
Bart has sourced the grapes for this super Tasmanian vineyard from a special old vine plot in the Huon Valley, aka home to some of the southernmost vineyards in Australia. It's a cool and spicy wine too, at once fragrant and tangy with rose and Campari backed by a palate that feels at once ripe and generous, but also lithe and sexy in a way that only Tassie can do. Made with minimal additions, no fining, filtration and lots of care, this is one super Pinot.
L'appel (the calling) is a project label for Bart Johnston, who has turned his love of Tassie wines into his own wine label. Bart is originally a Sydneysider who has ended up in the Apple Isle via Canada, the US, France, and so much more. It was in Montreal, circa 2017, when he first felt the wine calling after landing with a group of wine-loving Francophile somms. Soon, he was following vintages around the planet, working in both vineyard and winery, before settling into his current world, working for renowned Tassie winemakers and making a little wine on the side. Given his global experience, it's probably unsurprising that the L'appel range isn't just the usual Tassie suspects, covering off some unique alternate varieties from the mainland as well as some fantastic Pinot Noir.

Pairing guide
Elegance is still the name of the game with this Tassie Pinot, and elegance works when we're thinking about pairing, too. It’s the ideal pairing for dishes that are deliberately crafted with layers of flavour without being heavy. Salty Chinese roast chicken or duck is a great start, with classic Vietnamese pork a wonderful option too (though be careful to avoid lots of spice). Salty washed rind or something earthy like mature Gruyère is going to pair nicely with this wine, too.
