Details
‘Halara’ 2024 blends Nero d’Avola’s dark, savoury swagger with Grenache’s lifted perfume and spice. The nose is vibrant: black cherry, mulberry and blood plum, threaded with dried rose, bay leaf and cracked pepper. Nero d'Avola (originally from Sicily) gives depth and firm, fine tannin; whilst Grenache adds brightness, red-fruit clarity and snap that keeps everything agile. Medium-bodied and juicy, it moves with energy - fresh acidity, graphite-like minerality, and smoky herbal complexity. The finish is long, gently grippy and savoury, made for the table.

L’Anima Wines is Michael Williams’ small-batch love letter to McLaren Vale - made not as a side project for volume, but as a focused space for ideas. Michael’s winemaking path has taken him from the Adelaide Hills to Tuscany and Tasmania, and back to the Vale, building a toolkit that balances intuition with precision (he’s formerly winemaker at Bondar, another McLaren Vale bright light). Under the L’Anima banner, he leans into varieties that genuinely fit the local climate - grapes that hold shape in heat, ask less of the vineyard, and deliver character without heavy-handed winemaking. The style is contemporary yet grounded: bright, savoury, and textural, with thoughtful blending where it adds dimension rather than distraction. Wines are handled with a light touch, so you get clarity of fruit, a sense of site, and that elusive, appetising “pull” that makes a bottle disappear at the table.

Pairing guide
Aim for char, spice, and savoury richness. ‘Halara’ is brilliant with grilled lamb - kofta, chops, or slow-roasted shoulder will all work, especially with rosemary, garlic and lemon. Nero d’Avola loves Mediterranean flavours: eggplant parmigiana, ratatouille, pasta with olives and anchovy, or braised beef ragu. The whole-bunch Grenache component makes it a natural with barbecue - smoky mushrooms, grilled sausages, sticky pork, or charred capsicum. Try it with Middle Eastern plates too: spiced chickpeas, lamb shawarma, babaganoush, and sumac-dusted roasted veg. Firm cheeses suit the tannin: manchego, aged cheddar, or pecorino. If you’re serving something a touch sweet-spiced (pomegranate molasses, harissa, or a smoky rub), this wine will meet it head-on.
