Details
This apricot-hued, cloudy skin-contact banger - a blend of Vermentino, Gewürz and other fruity friends - from La Violetta has personality galore; aromas of ginger plant & lychee, fresh washing in the sunshine (you didn’t think that was a wine descriptor?!), tangerine essence and steely minerality. It’s savoury and tangy, and then to cap it all off has a nuance of amaro-like orange peel on the finish. Yum!
Whilst Australian wine comes in many shapes and sizes, it's perhaps fair to say that there is an identifiable Australian attitude and approach to winemaking, and it's one which is epitomised by the goings-on at La Violetta, the winery run by renowned vintner Andrew Hoadley. Honest, down to earth and uncomplicated, Hoadley has that almost punk-like approach to winemaking which has captured the imaginations of the wine-drinking public. These are wines made by instinct rather than by tradition, they aren't bound by expectation, and they aren't afraid to take risks to end up with the greatest results. AJ Hoadley has been called an iconoclast of Australian wine, although he'd probably be the first to say that he's merely trying to make the kind of wines he'd most like to drink. La Violetta wines are made with classic Aussie grapes, but they don't follow the rule book by any means. The result is a set of wines which have plenty to say about the southern regions they come from, with a real sense of presence and power which is impossible to ignore.

Pairing guide
La Violetta is a winery that’s consistently out to impress with their skin contact wines, and this bottle hits the brief perfectly with every sip. We especially enjoyed this wine with heartier fish dishes - especially served simply, with lemon and herbs - as well as with tried-and-tested classics like salmon almondine and fish ‘n’ chips. It’s a real winner with spicy eggplant dishes, too, particularly miso eggplant or eggplant and peanut curries. Nuts, grains, and roasted cauliflower will all work brilliantly here, and it’s a winner with salty feta salads!

Great Southern, Australia
Get ready to swirl, sniff, and sip your way through Western Australia's largest wine region - the Great Southern! Stretching from the coastal town of Albany to the scenic hamlet of Denmark to the south, this vast region is known for its world-class wine. Within the Great Southern, you will find five sub-regions, with Frankland River and Mount Barker being arguably the most noteworthy. But the Great Southern isn't just about the grapes - the area's family-owned wineries are passionate about their craft, using traditional techniques and the region's mineral-rich soils to create wine bursting with flavour. It is hard to pigeonhole the region in terms of grape varieties, Riesling does particularly well here as does Pinot Noir and Shiraz amongst others. So grab your corkscrew and get ready to explore the Great Southern - the ultimate destination for wine lovers!
