Details
Get out the decanter and the big glasses - here's a dark, hearty mix of Grenache and Monastrell, planted on limestone. A serious wine that needs some air, but comes alive when granted! Juicy cherry and chocolate mixed with moist dark soil and a rocky undertow. Plenty to enjoy here, just make sure you open it up in advance to breathe.
La Comarcal (The Local) is based in the mountainous village of Venta del Moro, part of the wine region of Valencia. It’s the project of close friends, Javi Revert and Victor Marques, who met as young makers at one of the iconic wineries of the region, Celler del Roure, where they worked together for over a decade. La Comarcal attempts to combine the intensity with which both Victor and Javi work (focussing on regenerative farming practices, keeping to the heritage varietals of Valencia, old vines and terroir expressiveness), with what they see as their personal characters; an unflustered calmness considered typical of the people of the Mediterranean coast. The result is La Comarcal - fresh, vibrant, gluggable wine produced with all of the care and attention to detail in farming and wine making that Javi uses in his own personal project or Victor maintains at Celler del Roure. The kicker? A laidback price tag and a thoroughly vinous style that suggests more seriousness than the labels do! All four wines they produce are made using native yeasts, organic farming with some biodynamic treatments and no additions other than small amounts of sulphur. They are delicious expressions of modern Spanish farming and winemaking, from traditional varieties of the region.

Pairing guide
Made from a winning combo of timeless Spanish varieties, this beautiful red blend from La Comarcal had us reaching for more from the very first tempting sip! It’s a brilliantly food-friendly bottle; the Garnacha and Monastrell grapes in the blend mean it’s wonderful with hearty red meats like lamb chops and sirloin steak, especially if given depth with smoky pimenton, rich black garlic and braised beans or lentils. Cassoulet and other meaty stews, paella with pork or chicken, and roasted tomatoes, sweet potatoes and other root vegetables are also going to be excellent with this blend.
