Details
Wow. This is a wine like you've perhaps never had before. A youthful, joyous expression of Shiraz juice. inky purple in the glass, it screams pure fruit. Slurpy, a little sloppy (no oak or tannin here), very easy to drink, just the thing for summer BBQ.
The Barossa Valley is a bastion of tradition - the heartland of South Australian wine, and in many ways the centre of Australian wine itself. Families have lived there for over 150 years, growing grapes and making wine on the same patches of dirt. This kind of tradition is wonderful to behold, but can sometimes stifle innovation. It's a joy then to see the best of both worlds at an institution like Kalleske. With family roots going back to 1853, they have grown grapes in the region for six generations, and have been certified biodynamic since 1998. In 2002, seventh generation family member Troy Kalleske set up the eponymous winery to start making wines from this family's high quality grapes. Some of the wines they make follow the Barossa norm of power and impact, whereas others have a foot firmly in the world of modern winemaking, with a lighter touch and more delicate flavours. The Kalleske family are active practitioners of sustainable farming. They are caretakers of the land and not only want to maintain the environment but improve it for future generations. This is one iconic place where the future beckons brightly.

Pairing guide
This Shiraz from Kalleske is a fantastic example of everything we love about Australia’s signature grape varietal - it’s got deeply delicious fruit flavours, plenty of body, and a structure that definitely makes its presence known on the palate. Ideal for barbecues, great for big family dinners, and equally fantastic for relaxing with in the evening, we love pairing this wine with chargrilled beef and lamb, homemade burgers, sausage sandwiches, and meaty pies. Brisket, and other USA-style cook-out favourites, will work very nicely. It’s also a good wine for chilli con carne (or a veggie alternative), eggplant fattoush, kofta, and roasted or barbecued Mediterranean vegetables.
