Details
With a combination of old vine Tempranillo, Garnacha and Viura, this full bodied red feels like it comes from a different, slower time. It’s savoury and detailed, with black fruit and coal dust and dried plums, plus this wonderful blackness and thick cut tannins and gravelly edges. Complexity and beauty.

Jose Gil is the tiny project label of young Spanish vigneron Jose and Vicki Gil, invented to celebrate the naked glory of Riojan wine with minimal artifice. Drawn from a pocket-sized plot around the town of San Vicente, this is a label of contrast to the mass-market wines that this famous Spanish region is more acquainted with. From the outset, this is made differently. The vineyards are farmed organically, the grapes are picked by hand, the wine is fermented wild, matured in very old oak/concrete tanks, and bottled without fining or filtration. The result is easily the most lucid, detailed Riojan Tempranillo celebrations you’ll try.

Pairing guide
It's easy to just assume such a delightful Rioja is going to be another 'drink this with red meat' wine. But you don't need to follow any rulebook, because this Tempranillo blend is such a delight. Sure, a cottage pie would match beautifully, as would wild mushrooms in a tomato sauce. But the dark fruit nuances offer up so much complexity that other things work wonderfully - like smoked fish, lentil dhal or even a beef massaman.

Wine region
Rioja, Spain
Rioja (riˈouhɑ) is one of Spain’s most well-known wine regions, located in the north of Spain. The region has a long history of making wine that dates back to the period of the Roman Empire. The climate is typically Mediterranean with hot summers and cool winters which suits the varieties of Rioja; Tempranillo, Garnacha and Graciano. Graciano almost became extinct due to the effects of phylloxera in the late 1800s however, luckily, the variety is back in full swing. There are three main classifications of wine according to their ageing process- Crianza, Reserve and Gran Reserva.
