Details
Ribolla Gialla is not only fun to say (REE-bolla JALL-ah) but also fun to make for a lot of wineries, with a spectrum from clean and crisp to cloudy, orange wine. The Vigna Runc example is very much in the clean and crisp spectrum with plenty of apple and melon fruit and crisp finish. There is an underlying cheesy note but for the most part this is a lovely segway from Riesling.

Il Carpino sits on the ‘Golden Strip’ in Friuli-Venezia region of northeastern Italy – the original home of skin-contact whites! Iconic in the true sense of the word. Put it this way, Il Carpino’s neighbours are Gravner and Radikon, producers that catapulted skin contact wines into folklore! Il Carpino is run by husband and wife Franco and Anna Sosol. Together they manage a modest but highly sought 17 ha of organically farmed vineyards. Located in the village of San Floriano del Colli, a hilly region on the border of Slovenia. The site is further Inland and at higher altitude than most producers and is known for its sustainable farming. Il Carpino Winery refuses to use chemicals, only utilising organic products where necessary and applying biodynamic practices at the source of their best parcels. Whether you’re trying their heralded ‘Vini Macerati’ (skin-contact) style or the approachable ‘Vigna Runc’ range, the wines are phenomenally pure, brilliantly detailed, and have a distinctive mineral inflection. These wines won’t be around for long! So take a ticket, or better yet, add it to your basket!

Wine region
Friuli, Italy
Friuli is a wine region located in the northeastern part of Italy, near the border with Slovenia. The region is known for producing a variety of wine styles, including white, red, and sparkling wines. The white wines of Friuli are often made from grape varieties such as Pinot Grigio, Sauvignon Blanc, and Chardonnay, and are known for their crisp, aromatic character. Friuli is also home to a number of indigenous grape varieties, such as Tocai Friulano and Ribolla Gialla, which are used to produce distinctive white wines. The red wines of Friuli are typically made from grape varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Refosco, and are known for their elegance and finesse. Friuli has a unique climate, with cool nights and warm days, which helps to preserve the acidity in the grapes and produces wines with a refreshing character.
