I Vigneri 'Etna Rosso' Nerello Mascalese Blend 2023
Primary flavours
Cherry
Wild Raspberry
Black Olive
Stony
Details
A blend of Nerello Mascalese and Nerello Cappuccio (aka the classic red grapes grown on the side of Mt Etna) and matured in terra cotta amphorae, this gloriously earthen, slightly rustic and yet vital red wine feels very real and soulful. With no oak to get in the way, there's this stony, red cherry energy here that is quite remarkable.

I Vigneri is not so much a winery as an association of grapegrowers and winemakers, all led by the irrepressible force that is Salvo Foti. Variously described as 'the godfather of Etna wine', Foti is a lecturer on Sicilian wine and its history, with a swag of research papers and publications that dive into just why the wines of Mt Etna are so magical. With the I Vigneri project, Foti, his sons, and the crew of grapegrowers and vignerons embrace the ancient methods of Sicilian wine production. That includes only using vines grown in the classic 'alborello' trellising system (there's a picture of it on the label) with wines made using a 'palmento' (an ancient stone building used to crush grapes and make wine before modern presses and pumps) and amphorae instead of oak barrels. The results? Fascinating Sicilian wines of earth, heart and intrigue that taste a world away from the manicured expressions of wine we see in a modern era.

Pairing guide
Nerello Mascalese like this one from I Vigneri, has such a unique character that feels like polar opposites - on the one hand, there's this earthy rusticity, and yet it's also rather crunchy too. We absolutely love it with smoked meats and baked vegetables, especially when you have earthy/richer contrasts in your dishes. It will be a welcome friend with a cheese board too, and we also love it with fire grilled chicken or pork, especially when some subtle spice is introduced to the mix.

Wine region
Sicily, Italy
Sicily is a productive island located in the Mediterranean Sea, off the southern coast of Italy. The island has a varied landscape, with low coastal plains to hills and even active volcanic mountains. The climate is Mediterranean, with hot, dry summers and mild winters. Disease pressure is low thanks to drying coastal breezes making the region ideal for organic farming practices. The soils are volcanic, sandy, and clay. Sicily can be divided into three wine regions, including the volcanic Etna DOC on the eastern side of the island, known for its red wines made from the Nerello Mascalese grape. The Marsala DOC on the island's western side is known for its fortified wines. The remaining Southeast of the Island produces a range of wines, notably Frappato and Nero d’Avola.
