Details
Tumbarumba is a great place to make Pinot Noir, especially if you're after a more delicate and spicy style. This red is not quite medium bodied, with a lovely spiced black cherry effortless mode and plenty of crunch and bite. Cool, calm and delicious that's the mode here!
While the story of Hungerford Hill goes all the way back to 1967, when the Hungerford family first started planting vines in the Hunter Valley, it's the modern history of this winery that is the important bit. Now once again a family-owned business, and with a portfolio of famous old Hunter Valley vineyards and more wines from the cooler, wilder parts of NSW, Hungerford Hill is back (with a vengeance). You can blame Chief Winemaker Bryan 'BC' Currie for the newness. Bryan famously studied paleontology at university before becoming a winemaker, but there are no dinos here - instead, he produces a clever range that covers everything from the country's best Fiano, superb Tumbarumba Chardonnay & Pinot, a whole array of spicy Hilltops reds, and some of the best preservative-free reds in the Hunter.

Pairing guide
Pinot can be a bit of a grape chameleon, with wines like this showing it can be a little lighter on its feet, but also blackberried and kinda tart all at once. We liked this with wood-roasted chicken or maybe some perfectly grilled salmon. It's also a total winner with anything featuring mushrooms. Don't forget the snacks, and of course, if you're building an epic charcuterie board (aka a plate of delicious snacks), Pinot is the ultimate crowd-pleaser that ties all those flavours together.

Wine region

Tumbarumba, Australia
Tumbarumba is a wine region located in the foothills of the Snowy Mountains in New South Wales, Australia, known for producing cool-climate and high altitude wines of high quality. The region was hit by bush fires in 2020 which did affect several vineyards with devastating effect. Tumbarumba is one of the best regions for producing Chardonnay in Australia but doesn’t get the same accolades as regions like Coal River Valley in Tasmania or Margaret River. The best case of this is Penfold's Yattarna Chardonnay which usually contains a decent amount of Tumbarumba fruit blended with other regions.
