Details
Fumé is french for smoke, and you know what? You can smell a little capgun smokiness in this interesting white wine. Made from the chilly slopes of Tumbarumba in alpine NSW, this Sauvignon Blanc has some juicy pineapple and tropical fruit aromas but with layers of subtle vanilla creaminess from a little time spent maturing in older oak barrels. Lots going on in this tangy little number!
While the story of Hungerford Hill goes all the way back to 1967, when the Hungerford family first started planting vines in the Hunter Valley, the modern history of this winery is the important bit. Now once again a family-owned business, and with a portfolio of famous old Hunter Valley vineyards and more wines from the cooler, wilder parts of NSW, Hungerford Hill is back (with a vengeance). You can blame Chief Winemaker Bryan 'BC' Currie for the newness. Bryan famously studied paleontology at university before becoming a winemaker, but there are no dinos here - instead, he produces a clever range that covers everything from the country's best Fiano, superb Tumbarumba Chardonnay & Pinot, a whole array of spicy Hilltops reds, and some of the best preservative-free reds in the Hunter.

Pairing guide
This Fume Blanc has bright acidity and oak-influenced richness, which make it an excellent partner for a range of dishes. Try it with seafood like grilled shrimp or scallops, roasted chicken with herbs, creamy pasta dishes, or even mildly spicy Asian cuisine. The wine's citrus and tropical fruit flavours, combined with subtle herbal elements and a delicate smokiness, complement the freshness of seafood and the savoury notes of poultry and creamy dishes. It works with diverse offerings such as cheesy lasagna to satay chicken skewers, making it a versatile choice for various culinary delights.

Wine region

Tumbarumba, Australia
Tumbarumba is a wine region located in the foothills of the Snowy Mountains in New South Wales, Australia, known for producing cool-climate and high altitude wines of high quality. The region was hit by bush fires in 2020 which did affect several vineyards with devastating effect. Tumbarumba is one of the best regions for producing Chardonnay in Australia but doesn’t get the same accolades as regions like Coal River Valley in Tasmania or Margaret River. The best case of this is Penfold's Yattarna Chardonnay which usually contains a decent amount of Tumbarumba fruit blended with other regions.
