Aglianico famously makes some of the most brooding and savoury of the southern Italian red wines, and this McLaren Vale red is such a hearty black wine. Powerful, a bit rustic, and seriously intense, it's a red wine of grip and grunt, tarry black liquorice and then a palate that goes for days, with the extra year or so of ageing really softening the edges. Richard & Malcolm Leask are the winemaking brains (who also happen to be brothers) behind '10 years in the making overnight sensation' wine label Hither & Yon. They’re always on the lookout for the corners of their vineyards that produce the most spectacular fruit, which lead to deeply characterful bottles of top-notch McLaren Vale wine. With a range of grape varietals to play with (including some unusual ones that are a welcome break from the norm in this wine region), these brothers are pushing the envelope for small-scale Aussie winemaking and are doing it with a sustainable approach and a sense of fun that’s totally infectious.
