Details
An alluring deep garnet red in the glass, this leaps out with full aromas of intense blackcurrant, hints of redcurrant, tobacco and vanilla. It's well balanced between the fruit and savoury oak notes like cinnamon and clove. Fruity and characterful, it's a classic expression of this famous grape.
A wine for the history buffs, poets and, let’s be honest, just about everyone! Established in 2008, the label’s namesake is inspired by the lush London suburb of Highgate and the 17th-century tradition of ‘swearing on the horns’, whereby publicans confirm their dedication to merriment and debauchery before entering their favourite establishment. The winemakers Stuart Leece and Mark Thwaites have done their own swearing on the horns by dedicating themselves to producing some very crowd-pleasing wines that are made for merriment and probably the other thing too. Highgate have really nailed the brief with their collection of wines. Sourcing Organic fruit from vineyards as widespread as the Coonawarra, Riverland, Adelaide Hills, Mudgee, and Orange, the craft wines that are honest and truthful, and representative of their grapes and origins. This wide-ranging approach ensures quality fruit whatever the season. Staying true to publican tradition, Highgate wines are tailor-made for ‘on-trade’ which means they’ll sooner be found in a wine list of a restaurant or a savvy pub than any big retailer. Thankfully there is plenty to spare… for now. The house style is ever evolving, but anyway you look at it, these wines are downright delicious!

Pairing guide
A beautiful Cabernet Sauvignon made from organic grapes is rarely a poor choice with dinner, and this stunning bottle from Highgate certainly grabbed our attention with its rich tannins and deep fruit flavours. It’s a brilliant wine for pairing with a steak dinner, homemade meat pies, powerfully savoury beef, lamb or game stews and rustic burgers. Vegetarians aren’t missing out, however - this wine is also brilliantly-suited for pairing with roast eggplant and zucchini dishes, braised lentils in a rich wine sauce and all kinds of smoky meat replacements. Delicious!

Wine region

Coonawarra, Australia
Coonawarra is in the southeastern corner of South Australia, located in the Limestone Coast of South Australia, about 300 km southeast of Adelaide. The region experiences a maritime influence due to the upwelling of cold ocean currents. The main varieties grown in the region are Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Merlot, and Chardonnay. Here you can find the legendary terra rossa soil, with its thin iron-oxide-based topsoil over limestone, giving it that unmistakable reddish hue. This soil type is believed to be a major contributing factor to the robust character of the wines.
The Coonawarra wine region stretches about 15 km, with more than 50 wineries. Penfolds, Wynns, Balnaves, Rymil and Katnook Estate are among the most notable and historic in the region. Each of them produces highly sought Cabernet Sauvignon that is medium to full-bodied, with brood notes of cassis, blackberry, plum and dark cherry flavours. Structured with firm but plush tannins, the very best of them cellar gracefully for decades.
