Details
Dolcetto - famously originating from Piedmont in Italy’s north-west - is a funny one. Meaning ‘little sweet one’, the wine is never sweet at all! The Heartland Dolcetto is proof of that: brimming with ripe blue fruits, plums and baking spice aromas, it’s soft, supple and sexy, and sees no oak but has gentle grape tannins. Fabulously food-friendly and most definitely dry!

The Heartland story began in the late 1990’s when winemaker Ben Glaetzer became excited about the outstanding quality of fruit being grown in some of South Australia’s lesser-known regions, and in particular Langhorne Creek, a cool-climate region with old vines that have been an almost secret source for many of Australia’s most iconic red wines. With a few industry veterans, Ben grew Heartland into an award-winning winery, and today they source all grapes exclusively from Langhorne Creek, and make only red wines. Ben is from the well-known Glaetzer family in the Barossa Valley, and grew up within the wine industry with his father and his uncle both winemakers, as are his two brothers! Ben graduated in winemaking from the renowned Roseworthy campus at Adelaide Uni, and then spent time working in the Hunter Valley before returning to the Barossa to join the family company. Ben won the Qantas Winemaker of the Year award in 2004, among other accolades, and a few years later he founded Heartland. Busy guy!

Pairing guide
You really can’t beat the beautiful flavour and depth of a good Dolcetto, especially when it comes to mealtimes. This characterful Italian varietal has been given plenty of charm by Heartland winery, and it’s going to be a fantastic choice for pairing with family favourites like spaghetti bolognese, roasted red capsicums stuffed with minced lamb and delicate spices, steaks served with mushrooms sauces, and Italian classics like eggplant parmigiano. Roasted tomatoes, cured pork products, and anything packed with garlic and olives will also more than satisfy!

Wine region
Langhorne Creek, Australia
The Langhorne Creek is a wine region in South Australia that is best known for its rich, full-bodied red wines such as Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec. The region has a Mediterranean climate with warm summers and mild winters, and a cooling influence from nearby Lake Alexandrina which helps moderate the temperature. All of which makes this region ideal for producing high-quality and age-worthy red wines. In fact, the region is responsible for a large portion of the red grapes used in wines all over the state! The region also produces some white wines, particularly Chardonnay, but it's the red that makes up the lion's share of plantings. The region is surrounded by picturesque countryside and has a long history of grape growing and winemaking dating back to the 1850s.
