Details
Guy Allion is a small organic producer in the Cher Valley, found in the south-eastern part of the Loire Valley. Committed to producing textured and delicious wines without chemicals, these wines are pure and good for you! Sauvignon Blanc is certainly the main grape, and makes up over half the plantings in the vineyards, and the soils are dominated by sand and limestone. This wine starts with some of the classic herbaceous and gooseberry-tinged aromas, but softens on the palate, with elderflower and lemon flesh. The texture is very giving and generous, and lacks the hardness found in many new world examples of Sauvignon Blanc. A far more gastronomic approach!

There are some parts of the world where it seems it’s almost impossible to make wine badly. One which immediately springs to mind is France’s Loire Valley, where you’d be hard pushed to find a bottle which doesn’t scratch an itch when it comes to everything from hearty, juicy table wines to seriously refined, well-aged complex numbers packed full of fascinating features. It’s here we find the winery of Guy Allion, run by the eponymous wine maker who claims he’s carrying on the traditions of his region, and doing his utmost to get the essence of the Touraine sub-region in a bottle for everyone to enjoy and experience. Guy Allion has worked tirelessly to grow and expand his family winery - originally a farm used for more or less everything except winemaking - which, over the past forty years, has gone from six hectares to twenty seven. He’s joined today by his son, Cedric, who was keen to inject a bit of modernity into an otherwise very traditional operation when he stepped up in 1999. Guy Allion is all about careful, minimalistic viticulture, keeping intervention low and expression high. It’s clearly been a successful philosophy to follow - this is a winery which continues to impress year on year, and grow from strength to strength.

Pairing guide
Loire Valley Sauvignon Blanc is an absolute delight to pair with food, and is one of my ‘go-to’ white wines when I’m not quite sure what to match my dish with. Sometimes flinty and savoury, with bright white fruit flavours, it’s a real stunner, and brilliantly versatile. Classic pairings include roast chicken - it’s a great choice for your traditional roast dinners generally, and goes well with pork, too - and fish like trout and salmon.
