Details
Every wine in the Gut Oggau 'wine family' has such a distinct identity, and here we have Timotheus - a wine that 'delights us with stories about his homeland, the limestone soil and the slate landscapes'. This is blend of Grüner Veltliner and Weissburgunder (aka Pinot Blanc aka Pinot Bianco) and given a few weeks on skins before a year in barrel, with the resulting wine a tangy, appley, stonefruit layered wine of grippy texture, tang and real presence.

Gut Oggau is more than one of Austria's most celebrated natural wine stories; this is a winery with a great story full stop. Eduard and Stephanie Tscheppe are the names behind this incredibly distinctive label and they're like wine rockstars. Eduard brings a winemaking background to Styria, and Stephanie comes from the family that runs the famed Taubenkobel 2 Michelin-starred Burgenland restaurant. Together, they revitalised an abandoned 17th-century wine estate on the side of Lake Neusiedl, Austria and turned it into a biodynamically farmed hotspot. More than just delicious wines, these iconic drinks are like fashion statements (which is not surprising given that Stephanie has a whole fashion label on the side). Nearly always blends, the pair use classic Austrian grapes like Blaufränkish, Zweigelt, Grüner Veltliner, Welchriesling, Weissburgunder & Gewürztraminer to produce fascinating natural wines of delicacy and profound flavour. We're just happy to land a few bottles.

Pairing guide
Skin contact, or orange, wines have powerful aromas and complex flavours that stand up well to robust dishes. Case in point, this stunner from Gut Oggau. Complex and flavourful, this wine is going to pair especially well with rice and seafood combos, and will also pair very nicely with Thai and Vietnamese flavours, especially noodle dishes with chilli and tofu. It’s also very good with barbecued pork - there’s something about charred white meats that this wine absolutely loves - and with spring green vegetables like asparagus and fresh peas.

Wine region
Burgenland, Austria
Burgenland is a wine region in eastern Austria, known for producing high-quality red wines from local grape varieties like Blaufränkisch, St. Laurent and Zweigelt. It is also renowned for its sweet wines, particularly Trockenbeerenauslese. The region has a unique climate, with a combination of warm summers and cool winters, allowing the grapes to ripen perfectly. The soils in Burgenland are diverse, ranging from slate to gravel, and provide the wines with distinct characteristics and complexity. Many small, traditional wineries dot the region, producing limited quantities of wine that are highly sought after by wine enthusiasts.
