Details
Chardonnay has long had a place in the Coonawarra, however usually overshadowed by Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz, it usually is forgotten. Here, Grey-Smith has made this isn’t a fleshy and broad sparkling wine with yellow plums and a touch of nectarine, it is a delight to drink and very different to most Coonawarra wines.

Ulrich Grey-Smith is a winemaker with a wealth of experience behind him after years working for larger wine companies down in the Limestone Coast during the golden years of Coonawarra Claret when every man and his dog wanted to drink wines from this sacred limestone soil. An ex Roseworthy College graduate, Uli (as he prefers to be called) moved on from big wineries to make focused wines of his own and continue to work on his collection of clothing from the 70s. There may only be two or three wines under his own label, and all sourced from Chardonnay, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t worth seeking out. His two sparkling wines, one sourced from Coonawarra and the other from Mt. Gambier, a few kilometres down the road, are both exceptional examples of aperitif style sparkling wine. Uli knows the Limestone Coast better than anyone and it is a delight to bring his wines to our GPD customers.

Pairing guide
We love a good bottle of Blanc de Blancs here at Good Pair Days, and it’s exciting to see this luxurious sparkling wine style really begin to pick up a dedicated global following. This release from Grey-Smith is a brilliantly versatile bottle of fizz - it’s great with canapes, deep fried snacks and street foods (especially samosa, veggie pakoras and seafood tempura), and with richer crab, Moreton Bay bug and lobster dishes. Egg-based recipes, creamy pasta creations, roast poultry and soft cheeses will also hit the spot perfectly!

Wine region
Mount Gambier, Australia
Bejewelled with natural features, such as dormant volcanoes, aquifers, and the region's iconic Blue Lake. It’s no wonder Mount Gambier pulls so many holidaymakers all year round! Among the charming old dairy business is Australia’s newest and most exciting wine regions. Vineyards in Mount Gambier benefit from a dry Mediterranean climate and low disease pressure. The vineyards are planted on favourable sedimentary limestone and volcanic igneous rocks throughout; ancient volcanic ash has weathered into a well-drained and highly fertile loam – a vigneron’s dream! Expect a bright future for this region, main varieties here are Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, with Chardonnay, Riesling, Viognier and Sauvignon Blanc, the hero white grape of the region.
