Details
Volcanic Lakes is a vineyard that Andrew and Louise purchased as a derelict piece - something with promise that was half abandoned. After years of hard work, they're now making Chardonnay from this plot that they're happy with. This wine is a stunning release too - made with minimal additions or subtractions, it's gorgeously minerally and refined, a lo-fi white wine with waves of creamy, golden flavours, a little funk and this superstar minerally crystalline energy underneath: a wow wine and a Chardonnay extraordinaire.
Good Intentions is the wine label of Andrew Burchell and his wife, Louise, who moved back to Andrew's hometown of Mount Gambier in South Australia's far south east to start a family and a wine label in 2014. They now own and run two organically farmed vineyards on the extinct volcanic crater that Mount Gambier is centred around, producing wines with a very distinct taste and feel that are like little else in South Australia. The only thing missing from this story is time - over the past decade, they've released some fascinating wines under the Good Intentions label from Limestone Coast growers, but it's only since 2023 that we've had a full complement of wines from their own vineyards. And now that we're seeing the full spread of wines from their own vineyards and they're absolutely amazing, especially the beautiful Pinot and Chardonnay releases.

Pairing guide
With such supreme minerality and layers of creamy, mouthfilling interest, this superb Mount Gambier Chardonnay is a wine that demands a dish with just as many textures. We love it with rich and creamy pastas, textured risotto and rice dishes and any dish that introduces both creaminess and a lovely tang. Chicken and other white meats, fresh and cooked seafood, even roast pork and dumplings, will work a treat here. The wine's inherent minerality will help cut through creaminess and fatty flavours, making it the sort of wine you'll want from entree to cheese and everything in between.

Mount Gambier, Australia
Bejewelled with natural features, such as dormant volcanoes, aquifers, and the region's iconic Blue Lake. It’s no wonder Mount Gambier pulls so many holidaymakers all year round! Among the charming old dairy business is Australia’s newest and most exciting wine regions.
Vineyards in Mount Gambier benefit from a dry Mediterranean climate and low disease pressure. The vineyards are planted on favourable sedimentary limestone and volcanic igneous rocks throughout; ancient volcanic ash has weathered into a well-drained and highly fertile loam – a vigneron’s dream! Expect a bright future for this region, main varieties here are Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, with Chardonnay, Riesling, Viognier and Sauvignon Blanc, the hero white grape of the region.
