Details
A unique wine - made exclusively from Nebbiolo, it offers red cherry, strawberry and aniseed, with some spicier, richer notes from the lees ageing. It's earthy and complex, but floral and sweet fruited. It's delicate but has oomph. Herby, long and complex. Quite a wine. Needs food.
Giuseppe Traversa is one of the unsung heroes of the traditionalist wine movement in Piedmont. Like other, more storied names, like Roagna and Mascarello, they produce wines as they were made decades ago, with no deference to modernity or convenience. The wines are made to a style, and that style is unchanging. There's no new wood used, everything is done by hand, and the wines take time to ferment and harmonise. The results are stunning - savoury, balanced wines that carry the true flavours of the region and variety. Yet to call these wines old fashioned would be to miss out on the sheer drinkability of them as well. Of course Nebbiolo is revered here, but its sometimes made as a rosé, sometimes as a sparkling! Even the long barrel-aged wines are seductive, with equal parts fruit, tannin and dirt. This is a special estate - somewhat under the radar, but all the better for it we reckon.

Pairing guide
Ooh, this sparkler from Piedmont is a real delight to the senses, and it’s going to become a firm favourite with those looking for an exciting new wine to serve at their next family lunch. The beautiful blushing colour of this wine gives you a clue as to what to expect - and it’s going to match up beautifully with bright and flavoursome charcuterie and cheese boards, light pasta dishes, and anything combining cherry tomatoes, herbs, and good quality crusty bread. It’s also a winner with pâtés, terrines, and grilled meat salads, and will even pair nicely with duck and pork dishes, too.

Wine region

Piedmont, Italy
The Piedmont wine region in Italy is a magical place known for producing world-class wines. The region is bordered by the Alps to the north and the Apennine Mountains to the south, and it is characterized by rolling hills and a diverse landscape. The climate in Piedmont is generally cool and wet, with warm, dry summers and cold, snowy winters. This climate is well-suited to grape growing offering slow and steady ripening conditions which lead to high-quality and expressive wines. Piedmont is most praised for its red wines, particularly Barolo and Barbaresco, which are made from the Nebbiolo grape. Barbera and Dolcetto are other celebrated reds of the region, and as for its white wines, Arneis, Moscato d'Asti and the rare Nascetta. Piedmont is also famous for its flavorful truffles, often used in local dishes, and pair beautiful with its regional wines.
