Details
While the reds and whites of Gerovassiliou get all the love, this rosé is something rather beautiful. Made from the local red hero Xinomavro, Evangelos lets this wine sit on its yeast lees for a few extra months to really give it an extra gentle texture. The result is a stunning pink wine that tastes of pink grapefruit, cherries and strawberries with a crisp but not harsh finish.

In Greek wine terms, Evangelos Gerovassiliou is a bit of a legend. Classically trained at the University of Bordeaux's winemaking school, he started reviving his family’s vineyards near Thessaloniki back in 1981, picking a stunning spot in Epanomi surrounded by the sea on three sides with views right across to Mount Olympus. While this part of Greece has a truly ancient winemaking history, Evangelos really pushed the wines of Macedonia forward. While he works with many different grapes, it is Malagousia that really made him famous. Evangelos is essentially the person who put this variety back on the map, and his version is the absolute gold standard: a serious, sophisticated white with just a hint of oak. His reds are just as impressive, using a smorgasbord of hard-to-pronounce local grapes like Xinomavro, Mavotragano and Mavoudi.

Pairing guide
It's not difficult to see why we love this rosé - it looks beautiful and tastes it too! It's a pretty easy wine to pair with as well, and the Gerovassiliou family think this works best with 'lobster pasta, shrimp saganaki with tomato, minced meat pasta, stews, summer Mediterranean flavours and exotic cuisines'. Here at GPD, we would also lean in and say it works well with salads, especially with balsamic or richer dressings, plus it is amazing with an array of dips and pickled vegetables, and we couldn't help but love it with a paprika octopus salad too.

Wine region
Macedonia, Greece
There are two Macedonias - The Republic of North Macedonia is a country at the heart of the Balkan Peninsula in southeastern Europe. It is quite distinct from modern Greek Macedonia, with which it shares a border for more than 160km. Now that that’s out of the way let’s start with the wines of the Republic of North Macedonia. There’s a continental climate with soil types including limestone, clay, and sandy loam. The region is known for a red grape, known as Vranec, which produces full-bodied wines with flavours of blackberry, plum, and spices. Further south in Greek Macedonia, you’ll find a Mediterranean climate, with hot and dry summers and mild winters, and also with limestone, clay, and sandy soils. The Xinomavro grape is the order of business here. A native variety to Greece that produces complex and full-bodied wines with flavours of cherry, blackberry, and spices. Crisp, aromatic whites known as Assyrtiko and Malagousia are made here too.
