Details
Claudia and Matt don't usually release a straight Malbec, but in 2023, this grape shone so brightly that it deserved its own special release. Bright red fruits, all raspberry and redcurrant, a subtle hint of spearmint and dried herbs, the style medium bodied, with effortless fruit and a real sense of refreshment the whole way through. No heavyweight, this is just a really well balanced, refined red.

In 1998, Graham Lloyd established a vineyard at Karridale, in the windy, chilly southern end of Margaret River, working alongside his daughter Claudia. Claudia went off to make wine all over the planet, but Margaret River was always in her heart, and it wasn't long before she returned to the vineyard with wine husband Matt Gant (founder of First Drop Wines in the Barossa) in tow. Sadly, Graham Lloyd passed away in 2016. Claudia and Matt took over the vineyard and established Gant & Co. to 'not only showcase the fruit from this amazing site but also champion the cool climate sub-region of Karridale'. Since then, this stunning plot has gone on to be named as a finalist in Young Gun of Wine’s ‘Vineyard of the Year’ awards, and the beautifully refined, thoughtfully made Gant & Co. wines just continue to impress with their fine-boned expression of Margaret River wine.

Pairing guide
Pretty, yet still with a real depth of bright red flavour, this Malbec shows how the variety became such a world-beating wine style. There’s no getting away from the fact that this really is a meat lover’s wine - it’s ideal with darker meats, game, and exotic meats like kangaroo, bison, and venison, and will work just as well with all your barbecue favourites, from ribs to steaks, chops, and burgers. Don't go too heavy on the sauce, however, as it could monster this medium bodied red. Vegetarians need not panic, however; we really enjoyed this wine with mushroom and bean veggie burritos, and portobello mushrooms, and it’s also a winner with your best homemade mac ‘n’ cheese, too!
