Details
You may not be able to pronounce this variety but no matter! It’s gorgeous and bright, with blueberry yoghurt and blueberry pie with vanilla ice cream aromas. Some cedar oak favours mid-palate but overall soft and silky, with melting tannins. Super-easy drinking. (btw it’s pronounced ‘ah-george-eet-ee-ko’! Yassou!)
As Greek wines have emerged onto the world stage in the past decades, few businesses have been as integral, or as influential as Gaia. Owning vineyards in Santorini and Neméa, Gaia produces some of the country’s most sought-after wines and have set benchmarks in what has been referred to as the ‘last frontier of the wine world’. Ktima Gaia (Gaia Estate) was launched in 1994 by agronomist Leon Karatsalos and oenologist Yiannis Paraskevopoulos and has since produced many ground-breaking wines that have defined the current styles. Thalassitis Assyrtiko was the first wine produced by the estate, and is an exercise in class, showing complex minerality in a way that expresses the true greatness of the Assyrtiko grape. A tiny production of ‘underwater-aged’ Assyrtiko, released after 4 years and named ‘The Submerged’, is a true collector’s wine that demonstrates the ease with which this variety holds the years. Establishing their Neméa winery in 1997, closely followed by their Santorini facility in 2001 has allowed Leon and Yannis to work fastidiously at their craft and Gaia has grown to become one of the world’s great wine estates.

Pairing guide
Greece's signature red grape has plenty to offer fans of big-flavoured wines, and this bottle from Gaia is the perfect introduction to those who haven't yet fallen in love with the variety. Roasted tomato dishes, grilled red meats, and rich curries ranging from butter chicken to a lamb tagine will work brilliantly with this wine, and you can also follow local cues by matching it with a traditional moussaka, Greek lamb shawarma, or dish of roast chicken with olives.

Wine region
Neméa, Greece
Neméa is a well-known wine region in Greece that can be found on the Peloponnese peninsula which forms the western part of the country's mainland. The region is famous for one grape in particular: Agiorgitiko. This is a grape variety that is capable of taking on many different personas, from young, energetic, fruit-driven styles of red wine, to richer, more oaky, age-worthy styles. We all know that Greece is an ancient nation steeping in history and culture, and its colourful wine scene is no different. It is home to over 300 local, indigenous grape varieties and Neméa's Agiorgitiko is amongst the most famous and important. So next time you are in the market for a full-bodied red wine, consider Neméa, you won't be disappointed!
