Details
Zweigelt is relatively unknown in Australia, but is the mainstay of the Austrian wine industry, and produces red wines ranging from the juicy to the solid. This sits very much at the medium-bodied end of the spectrum, with plush red berries, potent violet florals and fleshy fruits. Tangy acidity keeps it fresh. Yum.

Funkstille is a German word meaning 'radio silence', and gives it name to this wine project in a nod to the peaceful, the serene and the uninterrupted. Not so much a metaphor for ignoring the world, but instead finding one's place in it and being comfortable with that, and not impacting others. This expresses itself in practical terms with the vineyards being sustainably certified by the local Austrian organics bureau... and how important it is to be sensitive in such wonderful surroundings! The vineyards are in the southern part of Kremstal, just north of the beautiful River Danube, whose powerful currents flow past the vines daily. Not only are the vines treated wonderfully, but this extends into the winery as well - they are energy-neutral, through a Biogas and photovoltaic system, literally turning the photosynthetic power of the vines and the warmth from fermentation into energy. It's almost a bonus that the wines are great too!

Pairing guide
Austria’s signature red wine style might not be the best known Down Under, but it’s got an army of loyal fans which is growing stronger vintage by vintage. We loved this delicious wine with roast poultry, pan-roasted duck breast, slow-cooked pork knuckle and other rustic cuts served with pickled vegetables, and paprika-spiked goulash stews of pork, beef, or lamb. It’s also often paired with spicy seafood and tomato stews, mushroom polenta dishes, and - of course - Wiener schnitzel and potatoes.
