Details
Elizabeth Reed started her label Flor Marché in 2010 and hasn't looked back. Despite her winemaking taking place in Margaret River, the fruit for this wine comes from the Swan Valley, due north-west of Perth.
The vineyard is organically farmed, 60 year old dry-grown by an old Italian man named Eugenio.
Elizabeth doesn't use any oak for this wine, letting the vibrant, spicy fruit really shine through.
The nose leads with wild raspberry, rhubarb and white pepper, and gives off a distinctly spicy feel. It's medium-bodied but has real heft - there is spice and alcohol to really fill it out. The gentle tannins give it a washy texture that really flows across the palate.
Flavours of rosewater, strawberry and sour orange fill out the finish, with quite pure acidity to give the palate length.
All the best things come in small packages, or so they say. This is certainly true when it comes to the wines of Flor Marche, a decidedly small-scale operation run by winemaker Elizabeth, which brings together some of the best organic grapes grown across Western Australia. Elizabeth isn’t interested in world domination, cutting corners, or diluting perfection. She’s on a mission to show her fans the range and complexity - and all the delicious flavours - that can be extracted from the best terroirs of Wilyabrup, Margaret River, and Swan Valley. The Flor Marche approach is a simple one. Organic grapes of singular quality are sourced from single vineyards, where Elizabeth believes her exacting standards in regards to viticulture and sustainability are being met. The vinifying process is as simple as simple can be: a combination of gravity and time, no additives whatsoever (not even yeasts are added, as the wild yeasts from the vineyards themselves are deemed more than enough), and no fining agents. This is all about bottling the very essence of those beautiful vineyards, and producing wines which capture their natural beauty and complexity in every sip.
