Details
Grillo is commonly found in Marsala, which is Sicily’s version of Sherry. Marsala aside, this dry white has sunny days ahead with notes of preserved lemons and images of citrus orchards amongst a backdrop of Sicilian volcanoes and fresh seafood. Peachy with chamomile tea and a fleshy, dry palate with a nice pop of stone fruit and bright finish.

We all know history can be a bit stuffy, yet not wine history and especially not Sicillian wine history! Feudo Montoni is a winery in Sicily with its original building dating back to 1469, prior to that it had links to Roman Empires and travelling arabs. Don Rosario bought Montoni in the early 1900s and when he died, his 9 year old daughter became an orphan and was too young to run the winery. It wasn’t until she married that her husband reworked the vineyards after squatters were farming the land for their own purposes. Today the winery is run by Don Rosario’s grandson, Fabio, who has transformed the winery to an example of modern life in Sicily. The winery has historic vineyards of Nero D’Avola, Grillo and Catarratto and the vineyards are organically managed. There are stunning views from the winery where you get a glimpse of Mount Etna and from the nearby mountain you can see all the way to the coast of Africa.

Pairing guide
Grillo has long since been one of our favourite Italian white wine styles, and this gorgeous release from Feudo Montoni merely deepens our devotion. It’s an excellent wine for pairing with the freshest seafood and seared or raw fish - sushi, ceviche and poke bowls will all work particularly well. Trapani-style pesto sauces, carbonara and fish-based pasta are great options to lean towards, and it’s also excellent with white meat dishes and anything with plenty of buffalo mozzarella.

Wine region
Sicily, Italy
Sicily is a productive island located in the Mediterranean Sea, off the southern coast of Italy. The island has a varied landscape, with low coastal plains to hills and even active volcanic mountains. The climate is Mediterranean, with hot, dry summers and mild winters. Disease pressure is low thanks to drying coastal breezes making the region ideal for organic farming practices. The soils are volcanic, sandy, and clay. Sicily can be divided into three wine regions, including the volcanic Etna DOC on the eastern side of the island, known for its red wines made from the Nerello Mascalese grape. The Marsala DOC on the island's western side is known for its fortified wines. The remaining Southeast of the Island produces a range of wines, notably Frappato and Nero d’Avola.
