Details
This Nero really hits the spot - it has perfume and lift and natural fruit brightness. It's not a heavy wine, but just has the right amount of savour and grip to make it shine with a big plate of something comforting. It shows freshly crushed blueberries and cherries with flecks of violet perfume. The palate is fresh and cool, with some mountain herb notes. The dry finish has grip as well as succulence.
Winemaker Fabrizio Vella is a proud Sicilian. Proud of the island that he calls home and proud of the wines that are grown and made there. So much so that he wanted to create a wine range that was personal to him and his story, his place. Wines that reflected where he was from. So, working with indigenous varieties of Catarratto and Nero d’Avola, he conjured a compact range of four wines that all utilise organic viticulture at their heart, and focussed, careful winemaking. The grapes are all grown on vines at least 350m above sea level, meaning acidity is naturally high and the wines are refreshing and bright in their character. After having worked for a number of other Sicilian wineries over the past decade, Fabrizio has launched his own label and the wines are singing. They truly represent this magical island and its vinous history; by using only native grapes, the wines tell a story of the island and its geography. Catarratto especially is unique to the island - nutty, salty and dense, but with vibrant acidity. This is a bottle not to be missed!

Pairing guide
Sicily’s signature red wine grape is really allowed to shine in this gorgeous Nero d’Avola from Fabrizio Vella. Bold, deeply flavourful, and delicious from the first sip to the last, it’s a great wine for pairing with pork, lamb, or beef casseroles, as well as with grilled steaks and chops served with a punchy rub or peppery sauce. Roasted red capsicums, tomato and olive pasta dishes, and pulled pork sandwiches will also work well, and we especially loved it with wild mushroom tagliatelle featuring plenty of garlic.

Wine region

Sicily, Italy
Sicily is a productive island located in the Mediterranean Sea, off the southern coast of Italy.
The island has a varied landscape, with low coastal plains to hills and even active volcanic mountains. The climate is Mediterranean, with hot, dry summers and mild winters. Disease pressure is low thanks to drying coastal breezes making the region ideal for organic farming practices. The soils are volcanic, sandy, and clay.
Sicily can be divided into three wine regions, including the volcanic Etna DOC on the eastern side of the island, known for its red wines made from the Nerello Mascalese grape. The Marsala DOC on the island's western side is known for its fortified wines. The remaining Southeast of the Island produces a range of wines, notably Frappato and Nero d’Avola.
