Details
One of Eva Fricke's most approachable wines, this organic Riesling is just a simply beautiful drink. It smells of citrus blossoms, of the first rays of spring after a long cold winter, with the first whiff of peach and just a little herbs all over a light but not insubstantial palate that feels at once easy going and juicy, but also plenty crisp and taut enough to remind you of its dead serious winemaking intentions.
Eva Fricke is part of the dynamic new generation of producers in the super-steep hillsides of Germany's western Rheingau. A longtime winemaker at Leityz, she struck out on her own in 2011 to make wines from vineyards perched on slopes often considered too rocky and steep to be worthwhile. Eva then made her reputation crafting wonderfully crystalline Riesling that delivers wines with a sense of beauty and purity. Within the precipitously terraced vineyards, Eva has also embraced biodynamic preparations and continues to pickup new parcels of neglected old vines to work them anew. Then, in the winery, she believes in the old, patient ways, with wild fermentations, long, slow pressing and extended maturation on lees. It all translates in the glass to truly sublime German wines of next-level beauty and intensity.

Pairing guide
German Riesling, like this wine from Eva Fricke, is typically such a good wine on the dinner table, with that mix of fragrant and delicate (yet not hard) flavour profile so welcome. We really like it with roasted meats like pork or chicken, fried tofu and anything that has a creamy texture yet finishes dry. You won't want to go too hard on the richness or spice as it might overshadow what is still a rather delicate wine, and don't forget the magical power of fried eggs and omelettes, especially with a bit of crab or salmon for flavour.

Wine region

Rheingau, Germany
Rheingau is one of Germany's most famous wine regions located along the Rhine River and just 50km west of Frankfurt. Its picturesque landscape is adorned with steep slopes, mineral-rich soils, and a cool climate that produces vibrant, aromatic wines. The top wine styles in Rheingau are of course Riesling and Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir), both known for their aromatics, elegance, and seemingly infinite ageing potential. Some of the top sub-regions in Rheingau include Johannisberg, Rüdesheim, and Geisenheim. Rheingau has recently seen a resurgence in popularity due to the rise of natural winemaking practices and renewed interest in classic German wines, making it an exhilarating region to try!
