Details
Sure, Eva Fricke is known for profoundly mineral wines, but this Riesling is actually just a deliciously juicy wine. Medium-bodied and fruity, you can taste a whole lot of stonefruit and citrus in the mix before the finish starts to close in on you with its orangey grip and power. What a rainbow of flavour, wavering between ripe roundness and then sabre-like freshness and minerality. What a wine!

Eva Fricke is part of the dynamic new generation of producers in the super-steep hillsides of Germany's western Rheingau. A longtime winemaker at Leityz, she struck out on her own in 2011 to make wines from vineyards perched on slopes often considered too rocky and steep to be worthwhile. Eva then made her reputation crafting wonderfully crystalline Riesling that delivers wines with a sense of beauty and purity. Within the precipitously terraced vineyards, Eva has also embraced biodynamic preparations and continues to pickup new parcels of neglected old vines to work them anew. Then, in the winery, she believes in the old, patient ways, with wild fermentations, long, slow pressing and extended maturation on lees. It all translates in the glass to truly sublime German wines of next-level beauty and intensity.

Pairing guide
There’s no getting away from the fact that, with its wonderful balance and bracing crispness, a good Riesling like this one from Eva Fricke is right up there with the all-time greats of food-pairing white wines. This release is a stunning wine to pair with aromatic Asian cuisine - Thai noodles, green curries, tonkatsu and Vietnamese summer rolls would all work a treat, as would anything featuring the combo of ginger, chilli, coriander and lime. Simple fish dishes, green salads, grilled chicken and pork schnitzel would also work very well, as would a good homemade quiche with potato salad. Yum!

Wine region
Rheingau, Germany
Rheingau is one of Germany's most famous wine regions located along the Rhine River and just 50km west of Frankfurt. Its picturesque landscape is adorned with steep slopes, mineral-rich soils, and a cool climate that produces vibrant, aromatic wines. The top wine styles in Rheingau are of course Riesling and Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir), both known for their aromatics, elegance, and seemingly infinite ageing potential. Some of the top sub-regions in Rheingau include Johannisberg, Rüdesheim, and Geisenheim. Rheingau has recently seen a resurgence in popularity due to the rise of natural winemaking practices and renewed interest in classic German wines, making it an exhilarating region to try!
