Details
A picturesque site for any vineyard, Alto Adige is one of the prettiest regions on the planet. As to be expected, there are some crushed rocks, pear and apple and a touch of dill and honeysuckle. This is clean as a whistle with green apple and beurre Bosc Pears in large supply with a finish that'll have you salivating for more.

If you have ever been in the same room as a group of Italians and Germans, you’ll know that the best thing to do is sit back with some popcorn and watch the entertainment. Alto Adige is the amalgamation of these two nations that bucks this trend, mainly because all the locals are part Italian, part German. The region is a confusing mix of both languages, whether it be on signposts or the names they use for the grapes, however the result is stunning wines that are worth trying. Erste + Neue translates to ‘The first and the new’ which is a co-operative of grape growers who have been making wine together since 1900 and the relatively new bunch who joined in 1926. Together this group of growers have some amazing vineyards at their disposal across varied heights with vineyards ranging from 250m above sea level up to 750m at the highest point. Their speciality is their Pinot Blanc or as it’s known in this neck of the woods Pinot Bianco or Weissburgunder depending on what side of the bed you wake up.

Pairing guide
As far as we’re concerned, few wines capture the joie de vivre of al fresco summer dining quite like a Pinot Grigio. This delicious bottle is going to pair brilliantly with light and zesty dishes of white fish, chicken or seafood (especially seafood pasta or risotto), and will be fantastic with simple pasta classics and traditional Italian treats like arancini. Sushi, crab cakes, marinated squid, octopus and other zingy ingredients will work perfectly, and it’s also a real treat with lemon chicken or turkey dishes or a crisp green salad.

Wine region
Alto Adige, Italy
Alto Adige is an alpine region located at the southern tip of Tyrol, Austria, making it Italy’s most northern wine region. Given the region’s long history as a border town, it’s perhaps no surprise that German is the local language here. This goes some way to explain the melting pot of varieties available here, where you’ll find Austrian, German, French and native varieties in peaceful co-existence. But there’s no doubt that the French-turned-Italian Pinot Grigio is the hero of this region! The elevation ranges from 200m-1000m above sea level, but local wisdom has found 350m-550m to be the optimum for ripeness and avoiding frost! Higher elevations of Alto Adige around Bolzano grow especially good Riesling, Sylvaner, Kerner and Veltliners. But the lower slopes of Alto Adige yield the region’s legendary Pinot Grigio and Pinot Bianco, and to a lesser extent, Gewürztraminer and Chardonnay. The region also makes delicious reds, including Lagrein, Schiava and Pinot Noir!
