Details
Eight at the Gate is named for the morning ritual of assembling the family on Lanacoona Estate. Eight kids! Anyway, this lovely pink Cabernet Sauvignon-based rosé is a very easy drink, with strawberries (with cream) + some juicy watermelon fruit but with a fresh finish and crisp backbone. There's even a little spice for good measure. Easy and fun.

For Jane Richards and Claire Davies, it seemed destiny to own their vineyards. Growing up near their current property in Wrattonbully, they have always dreamed of starting their estate. So when stars aligned and they could buy the established Lancoona Estate, it all just fitted perfectly, but for one piece, what should they call their new business (rather than Lancoona)? The answer was at home. Jane & Claire are mothers of four kids, so there were always eight children hanging off a fence or gate on the property. Why not cheekily call it Eight at The Gate? There's more than a nice story here, though, as the Eight at The Gate range seems to have an extra level of heart and life, with legendary ex-Wynns winemaker Peter Douglas in the winery no doubt helping deliver some impressive reds, full-flavoured whites and juicy Wrattonbully rosé.

Pairing guide
With its wonderful pink grapefruit and watermelon flourishes, this crisp-but-juicy pink wine will pair with a smorgasbord of dishes, from burgers, salads and traditional pub food right through to scallops, Indian curries and spiced pork dishes. Perhaps the only reminder is to serve this Eight at the Gate Rosé well-chilled and choose dishes with a little bit more weight to them, as really delicate raw seafood, for example, might be overpowered by the slightly tangy and quite fruit-forward palate of the wine.

Wine region
Wrattonbully, Australia
Wrattonbully lies between Padthaway and Coonawarra in the Terra Rossa-rich rolling hill country of South Australia’s Naracoorte Ranges. It is a temperate region that is especially well-suited to the production of high-quality red wines, and is slightly warmer than neighbouring Coonawarra yet cooler than the Padthaway wine region to the north. For more than 25 million years, Wrattonbully and the Limestone Coast region lay hidden beneath the sea. When the ocean began to recede approximately one million years ago, 14 stranded coastlines or ranges became visible between the Naracoorte range and the current shoreline, and now limestone Caves are a feature of the area, with the region home to the World Heritage-Listed Naracoorte Caves. Many new caves were discovered during vineyard development, and some contain significant ancient fossils and prehistoric remains.
