Details
According to the back label on this Pinot Gris, this wine has 'fragrant fruit blossom'. Who are we to argue? You can smell some of the blossoms, along with pear and melon and a bit of rockmelon. It's like a fruit salad of a wine, with plenty of juicy fruit and still plenty crisp to finish.

For Jane Richards and Claire Davies, it seemed destiny to own their vineyards. Growing up near their current property in Wrattonbully, they have always dreamed of starting their estate. So when stars aligned and they could buy the established Lancoona Estate, it all just fitted perfectly, but for one piece, what should they call their new business (rather than Lancoona)? The answer was at home. Jane & Claire are mothers of four kids, so there were always eight children hanging off a fence or gate on the property. Why not cheekily call it Eight at The Gate? There's more than a nice story here, though, as the Eight at The Gate range seems to have an extra level of heart and life, with legendary ex-Wynns winemaker Peter Douglas in the winery no doubt helping deliver some impressive reds, full-flavoured whites and juicy Wrattonbully rosé.

Pairing guide
We’re always happy to see a chilled bottle of Pinot Gris at the dining table, as few other wine styles offer the kind of freshness and versatility that this one provides in abundance. This bottle from Eight at the Gate is going to work brilliantly with all kinds of fish and seafood dishes, especially Mediterranean-inspired fish gratins and casseroles, grilled prawns and seared scallops, and goujons with chips and garlic aioli. We also love this wine with simple chicken dishes, fresh cheeses, and all kinds of leafy salads and white bean recipes. Wonderful!

Wine region
Wrattonbully, Australia
Wrattonbully lies between Padthaway and Coonawarra in the Terra Rossa-rich rolling hill country of South Australia’s Naracoorte Ranges. It is a temperate region that is especially well-suited to the production of high-quality red wines, and is slightly warmer than neighbouring Coonawarra yet cooler than the Padthaway wine region to the north. For more than 25 million years, Wrattonbully and the Limestone Coast region lay hidden beneath the sea. When the ocean began to recede approximately one million years ago, 14 stranded coastlines or ranges became visible between the Naracoorte range and the current shoreline, and now limestone Caves are a feature of the area, with the region home to the World Heritage-Listed Naracoorte Caves. Many new caves were discovered during vineyard development, and some contain significant ancient fossils and prehistoric remains.
