Details
Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz is the quintessential Aussie red blend, and here it delivers some old-fashioned Aussie heart. There's a real lusciousness here, with flavours of cooking chocolate, mint, dark plums, and dark fruit, but with a fresh finish that Wrattonbully does so well. We won't lie - this is real full-bodied stuff - but that's the charm here. A wonderfully chunky maturing red.

For Jane Richards and Claire Davies, it seemed destiny to own their vineyards. Growing up near their current property in Wrattonbully, they have always dreamed of starting their estate. So when stars aligned and they could buy the established Lancoona Estate, it all just fitted perfectly, but for one piece, what should they call their new business (rather than Lancoona)? The answer was at home. Jane & Claire are mothers of four kids, so there were always eight children hanging off a fence or gate on the property. Why not cheekily call it Eight at The Gate? There's more than a nice story here, though, as the Eight at The Gate range seems to have an extra level of heart and life, with legendary ex-Wynns winemaker Peter Douglas in the winery no doubt helping deliver some impressive reds, full-flavoured whites and juicy Wrattonbully rosé.

Pairing guide
Mmm - a good Cabernet Shiraz blend is always guaranteed to get the team at GPD excited, and this boisterous and flavourful bottle from Eight at the Gate is no exception. All that robust flavour calls for deeply savoury dishes of slow-cooked red meats such as beef and lamb, especially when paired with stewed vegetables and pulses like lentils, kidney beans and chickpeas. Steak dishes, homemade burgers, Mexican vegetarian creations and family favourites like lasagna, bolognese and shepherd’s pie will also hit the spot in style. Roast chicken thighs, duck breast, smoked cheeses and mushroom dishes are also great options to explore.

Wine region
Wrattonbully, Australia
Wrattonbully lies between Padthaway and Coonawarra in the Terra Rossa-rich rolling hill country of South Australia’s Naracoorte Ranges. It is a temperate region that is especially well-suited to the production of high-quality red wines, and is slightly warmer than neighbouring Coonawarra yet cooler than the Padthaway wine region to the north. For more than 25 million years, Wrattonbully and the Limestone Coast region lay hidden beneath the sea. When the ocean began to recede approximately one million years ago, 14 stranded coastlines or ranges became visible between the Naracoorte range and the current shoreline, and now limestone Caves are a feature of the area, with the region home to the World Heritage-Listed Naracoorte Caves. Many new caves were discovered during vineyard development, and some contain significant ancient fossils and prehistoric remains.
