Details
This wonderful introduction to Central Otago comes courtesy of the good folk at Mount Edward. They contribute fruit from the younger sections of their own organic vineyards to put together a great "drink now" style of Pinot. Plenty of berries, rose petal and dried herbs in there, with a soft texture. Creamy and moreish.
The bucolic region of Central Otago in New Zealand saw Duncan Forsyth with John Buchanan establish Mount Edward in 1997. A region dominated by mountains, untouched ancient soils, cool air and endless days of sunshine the resulting wines are world class. Here, the wines are as good as the views and the snowboarding. Duncan Forsyth and Anna Riederer create wines that have been certified organic but they have biodynamic leanings also. They hand harvest, use wild yeast ferments and rarely filter their wines. Crafting everything from Gruner Veltliner to Vermouth, the team hold a special place in their hearts for Riesling and Pinot Noir. Their vineyards are located in the subregions of Bannockburn, Lowburn and Gibbston of Central Otago. The Earth's End range uses their own fruit from the younger vineyards, meaning the wines are organic and the vines are managed impeccably. Wonderful!

Pairing guide
Everyone loves a great Pinot Noir, and this gorgeous example from Earth's End is a tried and tested favourite when it comes to food pairing. Pinot Noir is renowned as being one of the most versatile red wines when it comes to matching up with dishes and ingredients, and this one is no different. However, for truly mouth-watering results, drink it alongside a hearty lamb dish, or anything which uses duck as a main ingredient - for some reason, these two meats marry up with Pinot more or less perfectly. It’s also going to be heavenly with rustic pork dishes, as well as those which use the savoury earthiness of beetroot.

Wine region

Central Otago, New Zealand
New Zealand's Central Otago region is a cool climate haven on the country's South Island which, over the years has become something of a Mecca for one of the most complex, beguiling red grapes in the world: Pinot Noir. Home to some of the most southerly vineyards in the world, Central Otago's wines have gained cult status of late, often being compared as one of (if not) the best producers of Pinot Noir outside of its spiritual home of Burgundy in France. The region, with its dramatic scenery, is complete with vineyards planted on mountain slopes in some of the most stunning wine-growing areas in the wine world. But it's not just Pinot Noir that gets all of the attention. High-quality Riesling is also made in Central Otago by a handful of the region's family-owned, small, boutique producers.
