Burgundy, the home of Pinot Noir, is not always known for juicy wines. But this red from Dubreuil-Fontaine is seriously open and inviting. It's a broad brush of red fruit - all the cherries, strawberries, redcurrants and all the red things, with just a little earthy undergrowth savouriness. Just try and resist!

Finding women-led wineries in Burgundy is not an easy proposition. It's perhaps a reflection of the traditions of a region that always has been about small, family-run plots and micro wineries. But still, it's something that stands out - and only serves to highlight Dubreuil-Fontaine beyond the excellent wines. For one thing, this estate doesn't lack history, with a family wine timeline that dates back to the 1870s, and now led by Christine Gruère-Dubreuil (and Hortense Gruère-Dubreuil as oenologist). While you can find wines from up and down the Burgundian hills in the Dubreuil-Fontaine range, the big highlights here come from vineyards around one of the most beautiful villages of the Côte de Beaune, Pernand-Vergelesses. Covering both detailed whites and expressive reds, the wines here always feel like welcome surprises - a reminder of what Burgundy can do if you look hard enough.

This expression of what the vineyards around Pernand-Vergelesses can deliver is such a charming wine, with that cascade of red fruit so welcome (and a joy to pair with). The winery suggests serving this with tuna tataki, lamb skewers, French omelette or sauteed vegetables, which sounds like a very welcome place to start. We'd like to add how nicely this goes with pork skewers (especially with some soy) and also miso eggplant for a more Asian cuisine take on the pairings.

Burgundy is located east between Paris and the Swiss border and is known for producing some of the finest and most sought-after wines (Chardonnay and Pinot Noir) in the world. The region can be divided into the following sub-regions from north to south: Chablis, Côte d'Or, Côte Chalonnaise, and Mâconnais, with parts Beaujolais to the south now under consideration. Chablis is located north of the Côte d'Or and is known for its crisp, dry white wines made from Chardonnay, made without the influence of oak.
