Details
Clos Berthet is a monopole - a single, enclosed vineyard where the wines can only come from within the walls - sitting at the top of a hill just above the town of Pernand-Vergelesses itself. This little sliver of vines makes some absolutely lovely, inviting, strawberry laden Pinot Noir and especially this vintage release, which is all mouthfilling cherry flavour from start to finish, with just a little mushroomy savouriness at the edges.
Finding women-led wineries in Burgundy is not an easy proposition. It's perhaps a reflection of the traditions of a region that always has been about small, family-run plots and micro wineries. But still, it's something that stands out - and only serves to highlight Dubreuil-Fontaine beyond the excellent wines. For one thing, this estate doesn't lack history, with a family wine timeline that dates back to the 1870s, and now led by Christine Gruère-Dubreuil (and Hortense Gruère-Dubreuil as oenologist). While you can find wines from up and down the Burgundian hills in the Dubreuil-Fontaine range, the big highlights here come from vineyards around one of the most beautiful villages of the Côte de Beaune, Pernand-Vergelesses. Covering both detailed whites and expressive reds, the wines here always feel like welcome surprises - a reminder of what Burgundy can do if you look hard enough.

Pairing guide
Bright and open-hearted Pinot Noir like this one will always be a seductive drink, and this Clos Berthet release adds a bit more mushroom heartiness in the mix for extra interest. Mushrooms and earthy flavours are going to be welcome pairs here too, and anything more savoury will contrast nicely with the rather bright fruit, with cheeses like Camembert or Epoisses a really surprising but delicious match for some French cheese magic. Don't neglect vegetables here as a centrepoint, especially when baked or roasted.

Wine region

Burgundy, France
Burgundy is located east between Paris and the Swiss border and is known for producing some of the finest and most sought-after wines (Chardonnay and Pinot Noir) in the world. The region can be divided into the following sub-regions from north to south: Chablis, Côte d'Or, Côte Chalonnaise, and Mâconnais, with parts Beaujolais to the south now under consideration.
Chablis is located north of the Côte d'Or and is known for its crisp, dry white wines made from Chardonnay, made without the influence of oak. Some of the best domaines in Chablis include William Fèvre and Christian Moreau.
The Côte d'Or is the heart of the Burgundy wine region and is divided into two main areas: the Côte de Nuits and the Côte de Beaune. The Côte de Nuits is known for its red wines, while the Côte de Beaune is known for its white wines. The best domaines in the Côte d'Or include Domaine de la Romanée-Conti and Domaine Georges Roumier!
Mâconnais and often overlooked Côte Chalonnaise produces red and white wines. Some of the best domaines in these regions include Domaine Bouchard Père et Fils and Domaine Jean-Jacques Girard.
