Details
This beautiful red comes from the famous Morgon Cru - arguably the most celebrated of all the Beaujolais villages. Morgon so often has this intense, savoury, ferrous edge that shows up in this wine with an intense dark berry character that is super impressive. There's still all that vibrant purple fruit that makes 'Booj' famous, but all sorts of moodiness happening here too.
Frédéric Jametton is an ex-insurance broker who, in 2019, created Domaine de Vertus in the heart of Beaujolais. So often we read about that story of a financier diving into wine and losing everything, but this is different - Frédéric has brought in the famous consultant winemaker, Guillaume Rouget, (son of legend Emmanuel Rouget), to run the estate. Unsurprisingly, things have gone pretty well, with the wines from this producer showing exactly what modern Beaujolais can taste like. So what's the secret? Well, you can start in the vineyards. Rouget has locked in fourteen different growers with small plots of old goblet vines within the finest Crus of Beaujolais. He then tasked these growers with using fewer chemicals, restoring soil health, and harvesting at lower yields. Stir in some modern winemaking and voila! Seriously impressive Beaujolais.

Pairing guide
Deliciously robust with a real depth of character, this Beaujolais really doesn’t pull any punches. When it comes to food pairing, lean into those earthy and smoky flavours with barbecued red meats, paprika spices and pulses like lentils and black beans, and you’ll be onto a winner. Autumnal vegetables like squash, sweet potato and pumpkin will be excellent here, and it’s also delicious with polenta cooked with parmesan, Mexican stews and American classics like brisket and meat loaf.

Wine region

Beaujolais, France
Beaujolais is the land of fruity, easy-drinking reds! This wine region in France is known for its light-bodied, juicy Gamay wines that taste of cherries, red berries, and sometimes even bubblegum. With ten different Beaujolais crus to choose from, there's a wine for every taste. But the real party happens when Beaujolais Nouveau is released each November. This wine is made from freshly harvested grapes and is ready to drink just a few weeks later. So grab a bottle (or two) and let the celebrations begin! However, Beaujolais is also a hotbed for the natural wine movement and some of the industry's most pioneering names have come from this region and produce some exciting, complex wines.
