Details
This is, unashamedly, not your usual Kiwi Pinot Noir. Instead, this is a wine that is very much alive - it's meaty, slightly wild and wonderfully expressive natural wine made with zero additions and lots of love. Cherry, five spice, a bit of cinnamon and dried leaves with a lovely full cherry meatiness, despite being only just medium-bodied.
Deep Down is the Marlborough wine project of Clive Dougall (ex-Seresin winemaker and viticulturist) and Peter Lorimer (Kiwi wine promoter and distributor), who mortgaged their houses and threw it all in to make Deep Down Wines. They made just 1500 dozen wines in 2019, and have slowly grown to what is now a tight range of Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay & Pinot Noir that have a sense of wildness and expression which is rare for the typically straight-laced Marlborough. Notably, all these wines are made from organically grown grapes, with minimal handling and typically low or no sulphur additions, again something out of step for this part of NZ where natural wines are a dirty word. Kudos Clive and Peter, for having a red hot go and delivering us some very distinctive Kiwi wines.

Pairing guide
With such a wild, untamed Pinot Noir expression, this fascinating Pinot Noir really deserves its own dance space. Crack the bottle open and drink it in before you do anything. Then crack out the cheese and antipasto platter for something delicious to pair! We especially like this with dried and cured vegetables, olives, gherkins, pickled sun-dried artichokes and capsicum, plus the full array of cheeses, especially washed rind or more pungent white mould cheeses. The cherry fullness of this wine also makes it wonderful with salty miso paste-coated chicken or tofu and Japanese umami-driven salty soy dishes.

Wine region

Marlborough, New Zealand
Marlborough is by far and away the jewel in New Zealand's winemaking crown. Situated at the northern tip of the South Island, Marlborough is home to one of the world's most celebrated and popular styles of wine: Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc. The region surmises the natural beauty that New Zealand boasts and is now home to over 500 wine producers of varying sizes, from epic, large-scale operations to small, boutique craft producers. Naturally, the region is celebrated for its zesty, pungent styles of Sauvignon Blanc, but the wine train doesn't stop there. Marlborough is also celebrated for very high-quality Pinot Noir and Chardonnay (the latter being some of the most underrated wines in the region). You will also find smaller pockets of Viognier, Riesling and Pinot Gris planted here. Marlborough represents almost 75% of all wine produced in New Zealand.
