Details
This is an elegant Adelaide Hills Chardonnay from Coulter Wines. Sourced from a small vineyard in Echunga, it has been given some royal treatment with some nice French oak barrels and all the bells and whistles thrown in. With almonds and cashews on the nose, this is a more savoury style of Chardy, with a touch of pineapple and mango opening up on the palate. A wine for a big old glass, served at "Adelaide Hills-in-winter" room temperature.
In this industry, as in any other, winemakers do get bored easily. In Chris Coulter’s case, it is the story of a winemaker working for a larger winery, getting tired of making the same wine day in and day out, and deciding to jump out on his own and start experimenting. Coulter Wines is experimenting with fruit sourced from wherever he damn pleases, with a focus on quality and, most importantly, wines his wife, Bec, and he want to drink at home. The great thing about Chris is that he sources from regions that other wineries might sneeze at, like One Tree Hill, which is on the scenic route if you head from the Adelaide suburbs to the Barossa Valley. The outcome of Coulter Wines is delicious, modern winemaking with a nice mix of lessons learned along the way. Chris will tell you that this vintage of his wines is the best yet, for the sixth time in a row, and that is why at GPD, we love him!

Pairing guide
This is a beautifully crafted and savoury Adelaide Hills Chardonnay that deserves food with a little elegance and richness behind it. Those almond and cashew notes make it a natural with dishes that have some toasty, nutty depth, so a pan-seared barramundi with a brown butter and caper sauce, a classic chicken and mushroom risotto or some seared scallops with a light hazelnut emulsion are all outstanding starting points. That lovely touch of pineapple and mango opening up on the palate also makes it a wonderful companion for a smoked chicken and avocado tart, a creamy prawn and corn chowder or a silky butternut squash and sage pasta. For something more relaxed, a good triple cream brie or a soft washed-rind cheese with some toasted almonds, sliced stone fruit and a few good crackers is a beautifully simple pairing that does full justice to this very special single vineyard Chardonnay.

Wine region

Adelaide Hills, Australia
The Adelaide Hills wine region, located in South Australia's Mount Lofty Ranges
of South Australia is characterised by its high altitude, cool climate, and diverse soils, which all contribute to the unique terroir that produces elegant, complex, and expressive wines. The region's altitude ranges from 400 to 700 meters above sea level, creating a cooler climate than other wine regions in South Australia. The cool temperatures slow down the ripening process of the grapes, resulting in wines with high acidity, delicate aromatics, and elegant flavours. Top sub-regions are Lenswood, Piccadilly Valley, and Basket Range, each with unique microclimates and diverse soil types that produce singular wine styles, the highlights are Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Shiraz and a whole lot more!
