Details
The Coulter Barbera exhibits all the hallmarks of this variety, as well as the gentle touch that comes with Chris Coulter's winemaking. It is bright and fleshy, with black fruit and a spicy, rubbery profile that comes with this Italian workhorse.
You’ll find in this industry, just like any other, that winemakers do get bored easily. In Chris Coulter’s case it is the story of a winemaker working for a larger winery, getting tired of making the same wine day-in day-out, and deciding to jump out on his own and start experimenting. Coulter Wines is that experimentation with fruit sourced from wherever he damn pleases, with a focus on quality and, most importantly, wines that he and his wife, Bec, want to drink at home. The great thing about Chris is that he sources from regions that other wineries might sneeze at, like One Tree Hill, which is on the scenic route if you head from the Adelaide suburbs to the Barossa Valley. The outcome of Coulter Wines is delicious, modern winemaking with a nice mix of lessons learnt along the way. Chris will tell you that this vintage of his wines is the best yet, for the sixth time in a row, and that is why at GPD, we love him!

Pairing guide
Juicy, bright, and brimming with Barbera’s signature red cherry and spice, Coulter’s C5 is an energetic Adelaide Hills red with a vibrant acidity that makes it an absolute food lover’s wine. It pairs brilliantly with rich tomato-based dishes like spaghetti bolognese, wood-fired pizza, or slow-braised lamb ragu. Its lively freshness also works with charcuterie boards, grilled eggplant, or a caprese salad drizzled with balsamic. For heartier pairings, try it with porchetta, roasted mushrooms, or a prosciutto and rocket pizza. Slightly chilled, it’s a stellar match for summer barbecues or antipasto platters shared with friends.

Wine region

Adelaide Hills, Australia
The Adelaide Hills wine region, located in South Australia's Mount Lofty Ranges
of South Australia is characterised by its high altitude, cool climate, and diverse soils, which all contribute to the unique terroir that produces elegant, complex, and expressive wines. The region's altitude ranges from 400 to 700 meters above sea level, creating a cooler climate than other wine regions in South Australia. The cool temperatures slow down the ripening process of the grapes, resulting in wines with high acidity, delicate aromatics, and elegant flavours. Top sub-regions are Lenswood, Piccadilly Valley, and Basket Range, each with unique microclimates and diverse soil types that produce singular wine styles, the highlights are Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Shiraz and a whole lot more!
