Details
A rare Rioja, in that it contains a mix of red and white grapes. What does this mean? An added layer of freshness and joyfulness, tied to the traditional mix of red and black fruits, savoury earthen notes and a mix of spices. Mouthfilling, juicy and textured, this is a brilliant mix of drinkability and complexity.
What's in a name? The Clos Ibai winery started as a small project in 2014, and its name nods to its inspiration and aspirations. 'Clos' is a French word that defines a vineyard or wine property surrounded by a stone wall, and the term 'Ibai' is a Basque word meaning river - in this case, dedicated to the Ebro River. The conjunction of the two words is a declaration of intent to develop plots of unique vineyards and, on the other hand, a tribute to the river that is the backbone of all Riojan viticulture. The focus is very much on quality - everything is done by hand, many vineyard plots are managed organically, and the oldest vines are over 60 years old. The focus of course is on red wines, but even then some of them have white grapes blended for freshness and tang. It is very much a 'new' project, but with a nod to the traditional work of the region. And the results are a thrilling celebration of the very best of Rioja.

Pairing guide
The most obvious pairing is with lamb but this particular Rioja would also do very well with some spiced chicken – especially if it has been barbecued or grilled with a nicely charred skin. A classic meat paella would be great and it would also work well with tomato based curries, roasted Mediterranean vegetables, and vegetarian dishes like a ratatouille.

Wine region

Rioja, Spain
Rioja (riˈouhɑ) is one of Spain’s most well-known wine regions, located in the north of Spain. The region has a long history of making wine that dates back to the period of the Roman Empire. The climate is typically Mediterranean with hot summers and cool winters which suits the varieties of Rioja; Tempranillo, Garnacha and Graciano. Graciano almost became extinct due to the effects of phylloxera in the late 1800s however, luckily, the variety is back in full swing. There are three main classifications of wine according to their ageing process- Crianza, Reserve and Gran Reserva.
